Low mpg

Hi I have a 97 xl1200S sportster w/DFT conversion. Had some major work done late winter carb. rebuild, new rings both piston. My question is mpg I was between 38 to 40 when I first got the bike 4 years ago. now with all I had done to the bike so it would be good for year. I'm now getting 25 to 30 What's anyone thoughts the dealer I took it to said they can put on a dyno to fine tune for an fee. Thanks in advance

If you were getting 38 to 40 mpg when it was a two wheeler and you put that heavy DFT conversion on it you are lucky to get 25 to 30 mpg. My freewheeler with a 103 engine only gets between 32 to 36 at its best for mileage. The sporty is a small bike with a relatively small motor and only a five speed tranny. Also what speed s are you going. Gas in the USA is cheap so have fun and enjoy your trike, a sporty with the DFT is a nice looking bike

Thanks for the reply. I bought it as a trike the first couple of months when I got the trike I check the mpg so I could avg. it for distance.

I am sorry. I thought it was a two wheeler getting that kind of mileage and then converted to a trike which caused the mileage drop. You say you did a rebuild. Maybe the mileage will come back after it is broken in.

Is the engine broken in yet? If not, it may need a few miles to loosen up before your mpg jump up a bit.

Even so, that seems like too big of a drop for a new engine. Does it still have the same air cleaner & exhaust? If those were changed, they can have an effect on mpg.

It may be as simple as the tune being off.

I would NOT put it on the dyno until it is fully broken in. Even then, someone handy with jetting should be able to get you really close to a good tune, at a fraction of the cost.

It is really going to be a process of elimination, as you go thru everything that was changed since you were getting better mpg.

I would suspect its the jetting....
