FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH - HIGHWAY 7 SOUTHWEST OF BAKER CITY

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Monday afternoon's collision that resulted in the death of one woman and critical injuries to a second woman after their motorcycles were struck by a pickup on Highway 7 about one mile west of the junction with Highway 245 in Baker County. The names and city of residence information for the two women will be released Tuesday.
On May 28, 2012 at approximately 12:30 p.m. a group of four motorcycles were traveling together northbound on Highway 7 near milepost 40. A southbound 1994 Nissan pickup driven by DERRICK A. COATES, age 24, from Baker City, passed the lead motorcycle and then crossed the centerline where it collided with the second and third motorcycles. The fourth motorcycle was not struck by the pickup.
The 46-year old female operator of the second motorcycle, a 2008 Harley Davidson, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The 53-year old female operator of the third motorcycle, a 2004 Harley Davidson, was critically injured. She was transported by LifeFlight to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho for treatment.
COATES received minor injuries not requiring transport to a hospital. Safety restraint use is pending confirmation through the ongoing investigation.
Both motorcyclists were wearing protective helmets.
OSP troopers from the Baker City Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP collision reconstructionist.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by Baker County Sheriff's Office, Baker City Police Department, Baker City Ambulance and ODOT.
Highway 7 was closed for the investigation until 5:55 p.m.
