FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH - HIGHWAY 7 SOUTHWEST OF BAKER CITY
Posted: May 28th, 2012 7:40 PM

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Monday afternoon's collision that resulted in the death of one woman and critical injuries to a second woman after their motorcycles were struck by a pickup on Highway 7 about one mile west of the junction with Highway 245 in Baker County. The names and city of residence information for the two women will be released Tuesday.

On May 28, 2012 at approximately 12:30 p.m. a group of four motorcycles were traveling together northbound on Highway 7 near milepost 40. A southbound 1994 Nissan pickup driven by DERRICK A. COATES, age 24, from Baker City, passed the lead motorcycle and then crossed the centerline where it collided with the second and third motorcycles. The fourth motorcycle was not struck by the pickup.

The 46-year old female operator of the second motorcycle, a 2008 Harley Davidson, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The 53-year old female operator of the third motorcycle, a 2004 Harley Davidson, was critically injured. She was transported by LifeFlight to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho for treatment.

COATES received minor injuries not requiring transport to a hospital. Safety restraint use is pending confirmation through the ongoing investigation.

Both motorcyclists were wearing protective helmets.

OSP troopers from the Baker City Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP collision reconstructionist.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by Baker County Sheriff's Office, Baker City Police Department, Baker City Ambulance and ODOT.

Highway 7 was closed for the investigation until 5:55 p.m.

Annette, this is just too horrible! I didn't know Leta, but she was one of us and that makes it so hard to comprehend. Prayers go out to all that knew her and all of her family! Such a senseless tragedy!

Annette, I am so sorry to hear about your friend. If there is anything I can do or if you just need to talk, send me a pm and will provide my cell #. I will remember all of you in my prayers. Do you know how the other lady is doing?
Stay safe!!!!

Received this info from another friend regarding the other injured lady rider:
both ankles are shattered her pelvis is broken and her right arm now has 17 pins and a steel plate running down it. She has multiply broken ribs and a lacerated spleen and liver. She is Day one into recovery and needs all of your prayers and thoughts. She has 3 months of a no weight environment and about 5 months until she can can start walking.

So very, very sorry to hear about this terrible accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of your lost friend and, to your injured friend, we send our wishes for a complete recovery. It is sad to hear of these terrible accidents and to be so helpless to change what happened. There, but for the grace of God, we all go.
