Limp Home Mode

Hello all,

I left Phoenix AZ on my 2017 TriGlide with 5430 miles on the clock headed to Alma AR to visit my dad. I rode all day and into the night arriving in Alma just before sun up. 1215 miles in just over 19 hours. The bike performed flawlessly. I parked it in my dad's garage where it sat untouched from Friday morning until Sunday afternoon. I started it up and proceed 3 miles to the local gas station, to fill it up. All is well, I enter interstate 40 westbound and rode for approximately 140 miles. I stopped for fuel and returned to interstate 40 westbound for Oklahoma City. within 5 miles my Triglide throws a CEL (Check Engine Light). I read recorded and cleared all of the codes to see if it would restart and run. The codes were as follows: P0120, P0641, P1510, P1511, P2135. After clearing codes and letting the bike cool off a little, I gently proceeded westward, to make is just 5.2 miles. The following codes now displayed:
P0120, P0122, P0641, P1510, P1511, P2135.

I called HOG and had them pick me and the bike up delivering us to an already arranged hotel in Oklahoma City. The following morning I arranged to have Harley Davidson World pick the bike up and take it in for service. After numerous parts (T-MAP, TGS, TPS, ECM, Speed Sensor) and 3+ days of diagnostic, data logging and continuity checks on wiring, it was given a clean bill of health by Harley Technical Support. The bike ran 150+ miles flawlessly. I stopped for fuel 5.2 miles later it displayed another CEL that produced the following codes:

P0120, P0220, P0641, P1511, P2135.

The folks at the dealership are scratching their heads. Do any of you talented techs out there have any insight as to what this might be? As a side note, I did notice fuel mileage dropping off a couple of tanks prior to this happening. Oh, by the way, the bike is completely stock, except for the Rhinehart 3-1/2" slip-ons and the majority of the miles mentioned above were ridden with the cruise control engaged.

Man I sure wish you some good luck with this. I don' know what to tell you either but it sounds like one of those "gremlin" type deals. However, when HD finally figures it out for you PLEASE post the info in here for future use by someone who might confront the same problem.

Hi Bob,

At the advice of my dealer, I did clear it after the first time it was displayed, and it took me an amazing 1.2 miles before it went back to limp mode.

When you say limp mode......Do you mean that the engine speed was limited..?

Yes, also known as reduced performance mode. WOT will result in a slow rev to about 2500 rpm

Wow......All i got was the Check Engine Light....That would have got my attention..

Lat us know what they found out the problem to be...

From the codes it appears the problem originates with the TPS - throttle position sensor. You posted that the tech at the dealership changed the TPS.

So it could be an intermittent electrical problem - bad/corroded connection, chaffed wire, etc., etc. These things are frustrating as heck and I feel your pain having been stranded hundreds of miles from home on several occasions myself.

One way to check electrical is with an infrared temperature gauge. Leave the ignition on for a while and carefully check. A bad/poor connection may have increased resistance and heat up. Worth a shot perhaps.

Good luck.

Did they check your engine for sumping?

Service Bulletin M1450, if your engine suffers from this it could run real bad, set codes, may be stop running

Too much oil in the crank case causes this, there have been oil pump problems associated with this

Hi Jack,

The bike never ran bad or performed poorly at all. In fact, when it failed the first time, it had just completed 3 days rest after a 1200+ mile run. With that said, it seems to repeat itself after 100+ miles and a stop for fuel. then less than 5 miles after fuel it will throw a CEL with ECM codes P0641, P1511. Today made two full weeks that it has spent at Harley Davidson World in OKC. I have been patient so far, however, I am wearing thin!

Another WOW moment

The techs have the most current tsb and HD support is a call away

With their support and the digital tech scanner they should be able to figure it out

Good Luck and please keep us posted;)

IMO, if I was a HD tech I would hook up the digital tech scanner and take your trike for a ride recording the ecm data This would be a good starting point before throwing more parts at it and hoping they get it right

Hello Jack,

They have ridden it 40 miles with the scanner attached, they have also attached a laptop to it and done some data logging while riding and all of that information has been sent off to tech support. I am starting to believe it is an issue with heat soak as it occurs after I have ridden it for a couple of hours and stopped for fuel. Shortly after the fuel stop, CEL and codes
