LED's?

I was wondering how many of you guys have put LED's on your trike? At the Bikes, Blues, and BBQ rally last week we saw several bikes outfitted with them and thought they were pretty cool. So cool that we almost had a vendor put some on the trike. We thought better of it and decided that we should probably research it, and also thought the vendor wanted too much money. Those of you that have them, what brand did you go with, have you had any problems with them, such as falling off, or a led going out? It looks like something I could do myself, even though I am not mechanical at all. Thanks for the information.

If you want LED strips you can get them at PEPBOYS and AUTOZONE in all different colors and lengths. If youre good with a soldering iron you can cut them to different lenghts and solder new leads on. If you want plug and play you can get factory plugs and make your own harnesses.
Heres a pic of mine taken at a local cruise night by a photographer.

I got some lights called Truflex from Custom Dynamics -

Flexible LED Lighting TruFlex Flexible LED Light Strips

They have a great selection of many kinds of LED lights, from individual pods to strips of various kinds in a bunch of colors for about any lighting you could put on a vehicle.
I have the Truflex along the bottom of the rear in 3 sections. 6 inch each on the outside of the mufflers, and a 15 inch strip between the mufflers in the middle. Total is 195 red LEDs in a red cover strip. These things are bright, and the Truflex has a lifetime garantee. After I put them on I decideed to add a control to make them running/brake lights. This cuts down the running light function to 30% brightness, and I am still running in a pool of red light at the rear at night. They really light up when I hit the brakes. Pics below.

Great customer service - after I put on the strips and decided to convert them to 2 functions, I ordered two 5 LED pods for the back of the Harley and the converters for the lights in the Wing. Within a half hour of ordering fro the website I got a phone call backed up with an e-mail asking if the order was correct, as the converters were not the right ones for the pods.

I also got some Hyper Lites.

Hyperlites Flashing LED Motorcycle brake lights, Running Lights and Turn Signal

These are 2 pods, one each on the back side of the speakers of the Wing. these have 16 LEDs in each pod,(not as bright as the C.D. LEDs) 8 that act as runnig lights, when the brake is applied flash brighter for 5 seconds then stay solid .the other 8 LEDs are amber and are turn signals.

A few more pics of the LED's and rear of trike lit up:

So....Can You See Me Now?

Something you may want to keep in mind, if you decide on the led lights (check your Iowa laws). Here in Florida, red or blue leds or NOT legal, for ruining down the road, only parked. All other colors are legal. I don't have them on my trike, yet. But I have been thinking about the white ones.

Re: LED's? / different state laws

All these states with different laws regarding what's allowed and what's not is a real PIA.

I'd imagine that if you were registered in a different state that allowed, for an example, red LED lights, and a cop really wanted to break your chops, he'd still give you a ticket if they weren't allowed in the state you just happen to be traveling through. :(

Just add yourself a switchbox and youll be good to go. Somebody hassles you,you just turn them off. Mine are all wired so that I can turn them all off or leave certain ones on. On the road I run red on the back and amber/ orange on the sides and on the lower front.

People do not realize that the law of the state you are riding in is the law you must obey. For instance Wig wag turn signals are a $125 fine in Conn. no questions asked. He just hands you a ticket. Blue lights on the front of a vehicle is another fine. I do ride with mine on sometimes and a few cops have flashed lights at me to waved a finger and I turn them off. I got mine at Parts America. There are a few places on line also. Red is the brightest yellow next and blue green and violet are the lowest but very pretty .
FYI you can leave them on for hours with out the trike/ bike running and it will not wear down the battery. I have had mine (about 70 extra bright LEDs ) on for 8 hours at a time.

I had over 1,000 LED's on my 95 Goldwing and they were from front to back with no problems. I had the bike from 95 to 2010 and was driving all over the U.S. with an average of 10,000 miles per year. I was never pulled over for having the lights on. If you drive responsibly and don't give the police a reason to pull you over, they won't bother you. LED's come in many forms, mine were spaced 1.25 inches apart and there are others that are spaced several inches apart.
I now have a stallion and a matching trailer with LED's and have no problems with them either.
Good luck.

I have had Chris & his crew from Chrome Glow put LED's on both my Trikes. Chrome Glow can be found at several of the rally's including Biketoberfest (last year they were at Destination Daytona.) They do a great job & stand behind their work.

Like to add that the LED's I have on the trike are strictly functional. The pods on the speakers are auxillary brake/turn signals, and the ones along the bottom on the rear are running/brake. They are all to increase visibility and safety. As far as I can find out these are legal everywhere, no change has been made to the stock lighting.

I wonder about the Ring Of Fire, but you can't see the red/blue (looks purple on the spokes of the front wheel) that shines inward from the front and you can only see amber looking from in front of the trike. Not sure if we'll add decorative lights for parade, parking and show-off use, but I know we will stay away from any solid blue anywhere and red visible from the front.

Re: LED's? Joe Florida

I used Joe Florida.com and bought over 350 led's for about $250.00. Great support from Joe and the whole system is in a separate harness from your GW.
Very bright lights. I bought the multi-colored lights and I really enjoy the variety it gives me. Many of my friends have single color and they really regret it after seeing mine.

I would love to change out the OEM light to LED ... So far I have not been able to
find a plug in play for the OEM's ... JPCycles has a complete replacement for both
trunk and in my case fenders (GL1800 Roadsmith) ... I just put a Back-Off XP which
I am running in Mode 2 (5 flashes, 3 1/2 sec solid) which works great, just want to
light up the rear end a bit more through the OEM venue .. Any help will be
greatly appreciated ..
