Late nighters---unite!!!

Wichita Falls doesn't rely on aquifers for their water needs. We rely on Lake Arrowhead,Lake Kemp,Lake Diversion, and maybe Lake Wichita to supply our city of 105,000. All of the lakes mentioned are over their spillways, right now. Even if we went back to Stage Five drought conditions tomorrow, the very worst,we would probably have enough water to last us at least seven years. Central Texas relies on the great Edwards aquifer for much of their water needs but it's almost completely full now and all the area lakes in that region are close to running over the spillways too,if not already over. South Texas has more water than they can handle, right now. Don't know about West Texas but it's always pretty arid, anyway.

Lake Kemp just went over this year didn't it? It's about like the aquifers. One rainy season just wasn't enough to fill it back up from the years of drought. The aquifers tak

Looks like your computer cut you off again. You need to pay it a better wage. :)

Dog gone it anyway. And I've been watching for that. So I thought. I've decided it's Firefox doing it though. And the only fix is a reset which really screws me up.

Anyway.......The aquifers take longer to recharge. And even though we have got rain for two years in a row, it won't help much since people are drilling new wells even faster than before. Think of a glass full of water with one straw and the same glass with 20. It will go down much faster and that's what is happening. They are starting to monitor it but like everything, they are way late and by the time they realize the damage they've allowed, huge junks of earth will be caving in due to the void left behind as people drain the aquifer like it's a never ending source.

OVERTIME EDITION!!!

Boy, did I ever step into the fire here tonight....

Very first thing, I get hit with the fact that I have to pee test 10 of the clientele. That took a couple of hours. Then in the middle of doing that, I get a phone call that I have a release tonight.

Turns out that at least the guy didn't know what he was talking about with the release. That falls under somebody else's duties. Not that any of this is hard work, it's just time consuming, and also I hadn't done any pee tests in about 6 years, and these are completely different than the ones I used to administer.

So I learned something new tonight I reckon. And, I've already got 3600 steps on my fitness band since midnight. I bet I meet my goal before I leave here in the morning.

Another bright spot--I'm making time and a half doing all this. :D

Anxiously awaiting yet another post by Kevin about their trip to all points west. Right now, he is posting pics from Zion National Park. He's done two posts already tonight, and looks as if he's going to post to post a third.

I've been looking back on their trip to the Arctic Circle while awaiting his posts of their present trip.

Saturday at 11:00pm was my Monday when I worked third shift. Have things changed that much? This was 40 years ago so I can see it changing in that time.

Everything is always crappy in a prison. ;)

Nah, not really...it's a great job that I'm thankful to have. I've just worked my butt off all weekend around the house, not to mention I picked up that extra shift on my day off. I really ought to try to pick up shift on evenings on the weekends, so both my days off are free. I dislike working doubles, but right now it's more beneficial having two days off in a row.

You up late or early?

Up early. Just woke up so said screw it. Maybe I can get bored reading stuff and fall asleep so I can wake up again and have coffee. This happens every now and then. Got 4 hours of sleep. Should be good for awhile.:pepper:

Good. I'm dead dog tired because I worked my ass off yesterday in our yard around the pool. Also repaired our screen house.

I need somebody to help keep me awake and you can be the answer...for as long as you last anyhow. ThumbUp

Heck, I only have an hour and it will be time to get up anyway. I just don't normally get to this site until around 5am. But I'm up by 3am every day. Or usually.

Stop by earlier if you'd like. With the exception of Tuesday night and Wednesday night (or Wednesday morning or Thursday morning, whichever way you prefer), I'm usually here. I check back in at least every half hour or so to see if there are any posts.

Is the 3am wake-up time just habit, or is there a purpose to it?

Well the real habit is hitting the sack at 5:00pm. I figure 10 hours is enough so 3:00am it's time. I started falling asleep watching the nightly news years ago so just said, go to bed and be done with it. 3:00am lets me catch up with things before taking a shower, getting breakfast and then start working cattle or tractor work. Just whatever needs to be done. Right now it's fixing fences. A bunch of it due to the rains and flooding. Just a lot of damage here.

I figured you were a rancher. I've seen you post about working cattle once before, I think. So sorry about all the damage that's been done. Mending fence sucks. I did enough of that when I was a kid to last me. Damn horses always leaning over the fence to get at what was on the other side. What was inside the fence just wasn't good enough for them.

I reckon for you, getting started early makes for cooler working conditions.

I can't imagine keeping a horse unless it's used daily. And not many do that now. I won't have one. Cows are just as bad. It seems the grass really is greener on the other side to them. I get a kick out of watching them when I moved them to a different pasture. Even though they've been there 100 times before, they still immediately search the perimeter fence to see what they have. It's really funny when you see it over and over. It's like somehow it will be different. Seldom is but that's the first thing they do. I do change things up now and then so I guess they are right.

You can't get rich in this business unless you run thousands of animals, but the lifestyle just can't be beat. People are doing a disservice to our true farmers and ranchers. It's our food source and some day they see what they've done by not making a more important roll. I'm small scale. Why still works or we could not survive. That's wrong. But that's where we are. You'll soon only get your food from large corporations and foreign sources. Real close right now. There're very few small operations anymore. Yet that's all there were at one time.

Mark my words. You'll be sorry. Wouldn't you like to know your food came from a clean run ranch or farm that does things that are good for the future and you? You need the small scale operations for that. Thousands of them. My small scale operation has a waiting list for my product. People know how I operate so buy unborn calves sight unseen. Just because they know I'm not taking short cuts and use the prescribed vaccines with no hormones or antibiotics. Word of mouth advertisement only. Yet I'm supposed to compete with the large corps that take every shortcut possible. It's a very lopsided world. One that pushes the little guy out. I should get 10x what I get. I do get top dollar but it really should be much much more. So no wonder they are all going away.

So no wonder they are all going away. Selling out to build a new tract of homes. You can get what was produced there from China now. That's very very sad.

Just 30 years ago where I grew up, there were still several small time dairy operations. When I say small time, I mean REALLY small. One was only milking about 20 head of cattle. How he managed to keep himself afloat for all the years he did was beyond me. I went all the way through school from first grade on with his son. From age 10 until I got a public job at age 16, I was at their house nearly every day. The son worked with him every morning and evening. I helped as much as they would allow me to.

The man passed away when we were 16. Then his mom took over the day to day operations as the 'boss'. She kept things going for about another 8 years before she finally sold all the cattle. Rode by the old barn last summer (it is right beside the road), and it was soooo run down. It was run down even when they were in operation, but now I'd be afraid to even walk inside now, because it looked like it could collapse at any time.

And....here I am again!

Last night of the quarter. Tomorrow night I start the truck relief schedule. Same nights off, just now I work 4 perimeter truck shifts, then a unit shift on my Friday. This will be my first quarter that I've worked outside the fence so much in the 13 years I've been in the bureau. Don't know if it will be a 'break', or I'll be bored to death. Either way, I've stuck myself there.

I hope it will be tolerable. What will you be doing out there?

Literally drive in circles. It's about 1.2 miles around the institution fence, plus connecting grounds that I will be patrolling. Honestly, it will be a welcome break. In 13 years, I've had pretty much every day contact with inmates. Just once a week now for the next 3 months.

Looks like birthday wishes are in order for Bill...

Happy Birthday, Bill!!!

I even bought you a cake....

Just 3 more days until my birthday comes up.

Today (June 12th) marks the TG's first birthday, and tomorrow (June 13th) marks my first anniversary as a member here on TT. It's been a really good year here, meeting many new friends (at least online), and having a lot of fun.

Coming here lets me forget some of the troubles I have IRL, and helps me to unwind. So, I guess this place is kind of like a stiff drink at the end of a hard day (or during it as the case may be with me).
