We were 20 minutes into our regular Sunday morning ride to the Peaks of Otter for breakfast when a large dog decided he wanted a piece of the trike.

He escaped relatively unscathed, but managed to crack some of the fiberglass on the wheel well.

Hopefully, he will retain some memory of the encounter.

Poor dog, should have been home.

The wheel well is fixable, not the best place for repainting.

A good paint supply/body shop can match the paint.

Fortunately, I'm only an hour from California Side Car and will take it to them for the repair.

We ride by the dog's place almost every Sunday. He's usually hanging around in the yard, but not going after vehicles.

First, he tried to grab the car 100 yards in front of me and, when that didn't work out, he looked for easier pickings!

Smack, thump ... check rear view mirror ... rolled several times ... then ran to the house. I turned around and went to the house and he ran around back non the worse for wear.

It sounds as though the dog won't be chasing vehicles any more! I'm glad it only banged up your wheel well and didn't cause a more serious crash, and I'm glad the dog survived too.

I'd be having the dog's owner foot the repair bills, they are liable since they didn't have the dog restrained.

Msocko3 may have a good point. The only problem I might see is if no one else saw this happen. It would be your word only that the dog was responsible for the damage. And trying to stop when it was occurring to find the owner could've been a bit tricky in itself not knowing if the dog would've bitten the rider. I almost had the same thing happen to me but I saw the dog trying to intercept me in time that I twisted the throttle and took off before he could catch me. :AGGHH:;)

By the way,, I'm located just north of you outside of Charlottesville. ThumbUp

I think I would stop and have a talk with the dog owner since you travel that way all the time. A car/bike chaser is a problem for all that travel that road.

I considered seeking restitution, but the socioeconomic status of where it occurred tells me that I'd be better served by just self insuring the damage.
