Just got back from a 1,000+ mile weekend...am digging the GPS

Mary and I went for a long weekend up to the Abate Rally in Indiana. Traveled through 5 States and had a great time. (will be putting together a little video later this week)

Before this trip I had Never used a GPS, ever, on anything.

Decided to use the built in one on this trip. WOW! It is pretty amazing! I know Mary liked it as much as me (or more) because she did not have to try reading the map going down the road and yell in my ear where to turn next.

I had read that it was not so great for multiple stops....so I just put in the City and State of the next anticipated stop for gas, and it took us right there.

Besides the voice talking thru the speakers, sometimes there was a picture that would come up on the screen showing the road signs and which one to take.

This may be old hat for some of you, but I thought it was pretty cool how it worked.

The POI was useful too!

Bike ran flawlessly and we are thoroughly enjoying it! :)

Re: Just got back from a 1,000+ mile weekend...am digging the GPS

Even after all the years I've had a GPS, I'm still amazed at what it does and shows. I love the picture of the off ramps with the overhead signs.
But this H-D GPS does leave a lot of stuff out that Garmin has included for years.

Glad you like it.

Re: Just got back from a 1,000+ mile weekend...am digging the GPS

Yeah I don't how I am going react to the GPS on the new triglide. I am suppose to go in to talk numbers Wednesday and see what they are going to do for me. The Garmin I really like. I have the 550 with the XM radio antenna. Used it on my 93 Fatboy and now my Ultra. I have it set up to give me where the State Police would set and in city, where the traffic cameras where at. And the 93 Fatboy didn't have a fuel gage so the garmin had one built in it and once you set it up, it was pretty accurate. And easy to plug into the computer to up date. The GPS on the new triglide will be a little new to me but I thing once a guy gets the hang of it there won't be a need for my old Garmin.

Oh yes there will be. Believe me you will kick yourself if you get rid of the Garmin. I used my Zumo 660 95% of the time on my Rolling Thunder trip because the onboard GPS doesn't do a bunch of things my Zumo does. One great thing about the Zumo is you can input address or look up POI's in the comfort of your motel room and not have to sit in the rain or scorching sun to do so like you do with the H-D unit. The Zumo also lists addresses by distance to present location not like the H-D unit - it lists them alphabetically....really stupid. And there are more.
Road captains in our chapter hate it because you can only input 9 waypoints = really stupid. Maybe H-D will work out all the bugs on the 2015's hope so and if they do I hope they will be upgradable on the 2014's.

Yes, I have read all about the short-comings of the HD GPS, and don't doubt them. But having never used one before, I was/am very impressed with how much easier it made things for us.

btw, when I did the POI it brought the list up alphabetically, but I only had to touch the screen once to change it to list it by distance from present location.

Kevin, please explain that in more detail. If I have 20 destinations saved and I want to find the next closest destination to where I'm at presently, what do I have to do to change from alphabetic to distance to next location? That is a major problem for me and I'm sure others and will make life a lot easier. I was wondering if there was some way to do that, but couldn't find it in the manual anywhere - of course there's a lot that's not explained in the manual.
You're lucky you weren't spoiled with a Garmin unit. :) I agree if you using a GPS for the first time, it is amazing - even the H-D one.
I think if Harley just went with a Garmin unit in the first place, there'd be no gripes.

Hey Gary,

My newness at GPS is showing.

You asked about addresses that you had input. I answered in regards to POI, like gas stations, Motels, etc.

I just went out and clicked POI and chose gas stations and it brought them up alphabetically. You can see that in the first picture below-

GPS1_zps4762b2f2.jpg

I then clicked the middle set of arrows on the right side...it changed the list from alphabetical to distance from current location, pictured below-

GPS2_zpsa1b4374b.jpg

I apologize for the mix-up, and if it got your hopes up. I tried to do the same thing with address I had input, but that little set of arrows is not there...all I could get was the list of address in alphabetical also.

Re: Just got back from a 1,000+ mile weekend...am digging the GPS

Now ... if you could tell me how to cancel route navigation (without voice command mike plugged in) I would be EXTREMELY grateful.

YES I do like the GPS. Took me a bit to find the prompt volume I prefer. YES the 3D pics of interchange lane changes is very cool. We have been using it to go visit Harley Dealers for a York Open House Promotion. We have 14 out of 17 needed Dealer visits. 3 more to go!!

We plan our routes on-line and augment with the GPS. Always have our 2014 HOG Touring Maps with us.

Love my 2014 Tri Glide more and more :D.

Re: Just got back from a 1,000+ mile weekend...am digging the GPS

Kevin, thanks for all your input. My gas station list also shows in what direction the gas stations are.
You got my hopes up that there was a way to list addresses by distance. Oh well maybe there will be an update fix. Thanks again.

I can check display for stations by name, but I usually just punch "ALL" to give me all brand names listed together - I'm not picky when I'm low on gas. :) :) :)

Just noticed yours give the direction with letters, mine gives directions with arrows.

Gary, sorry for getting your hopes up. I'm sure there's far more that it does than I am even aware of...just in the very beginning learning stages of it. Mine may display with arrows too...just have not taken the time to explore.

Bob, I'm pretty sure there's a "Stop" button you can push that will stop the navigation process....I remember doing that. Also, if I did not want the voice talking, I would just turn down the volume all the way down. Took me awhile to realize you can only change the volume when it's talking...but you can make it talk anytime by hitting the "Repeat" button.

Re: Just got back from a 1,000+ mile weekend...am digging the GPS

Well just call me 'old school'-We just returned home from a
2300 mile + road trip (Wife rides her own trike) and we've never had or used a GPS (don t want one either). Hit 5 of these
great western states and enjoyed them all!
I turned 52 thou on mine and she turned 24 thou - both Harley
2010 Harley trikes - we LOVE them/had NO problems.
Everyone out there ENJOY THE RIDE AND RIDE SAFE!

Re: Just got back from a 1,000+ mile weekend...am digging the GPS

Yes, there is a stop button for navigation. I believe it is under the menu icon in the map display - if you have a destination already in process. It is at the top of the list. ThumbUp

That is old school alright. Cant imagine trying to navigate around The Bay Area, Seattle, other big cities without one, And I know my way around most the big cities around the West quite well, including LA... Do you have to stop and look at maps a lot? Some of the freeway interchanges are so crazy, you have to make some wrong turns sometimes?? Do you have rainman powers and can memorize ramps and exits and turns and interchanges ahead of time? Or do you just never travel thru any crowded metro areas? Just curious how that works for you because a GPS simplifies so many things in so many ways. I could not perform my own job effectively without one.

Re: Just got back from a 1,000+ mile weekend...am digging the GPS

Trent, you did notice Pete said "we". So I'm assuming Sheila reads the map and tells him where and when to turn - - so Pete actually does have a GPS = Sheila. ThumbUp :D :pepper:

G - Girl
P - Passenger
S - Scanning maps

Well you are both right to an extent.
I use my smartphone quite a bit ( yes, can see the advantage for regular GPS, AT TIMES) and
still like 'old paper' maps.
As stated Sheila rides her own, but we converse
a lot, ha.
Ahhhhhhhhhh the simplicity of the OLD days....

Ha ha!!! Do your conversations involve a lot of pointing at signs and shouting? !!! Yeah, the old days were simpler alright,, but I am relieved to hear that you do use some kind of technology to some extent. My BOB and I both love good old paper maps too, carry them on board, and look at them all the time. Good one on the GPS definition Gary!...!

Re: Just got back from a 1,000+ mile weekend...am digging the GPS

Well... At least you are out of reach and don't get thumped on the helmet,, unlike some of us..!!

My old "GPS" was a dry marker on my windshield. When map quest gave exit numbers, well I was in heaven. As I went along, a thumb removed directions as I went along. After a few years, windshields looked a little funny, not all comes off!
Still would not give up my GPS. Need to fashion a sun shield for it but like it.

Thanks! I will check that out on the next ride ..... damn weather is not cooperating right now.

I've navigated to 14 Dealers (part of a York Open House Contest) .... and one was a mile off, several were on the opposite side of the road, several a couple hundred yards off, and maybe 6 were spot on. ROFLMAO :p

I have used the same "method"...but sometimes on longer trips on back roads the windshield was not big enough.

Here's a video Mary put together of the trip. We had a great ride up, great time there, and great ride back! ThumbUp

btw, there are some shots in the vid of the GPS screen telling me where to go. :)
