Just got an email from my son Jarrett who is aboard the USS Ronald Regan Carrier and they have been anchored off the coast of Japan at the site of the Nuclear power plant that blew up. They have been assisting the Japanese in helping prevent a further meltdown of the plant. I was kinda shocked to get the following statement from his commanding officer!

From USS Ronald Reagan Commanding Officer:

Family & Friends of USS Ronald Reagan:

I want to take this opportunity to personally assure you that first
and foremost all personnel aboard the USS Ronald Reagan are safe and healthy.

During our mission to assist our close allies of Japan, we were operating near the radioactive plume from Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant. As you may have already heard, radioactivity was detected on 17 personnel from our ship, however, we promptly took the proper precautions and the radioactivity was easily removed by using soap and water. The levels that were detected were very low levels.

To put this into perspective, the maximum radiation dose received was equal to the amount of natural background radiation one would receive in one month from sources such as rocks, soil and the sun.

Ronald Reagan has since repositioned away from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant.

As a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, we have extensive technical expertise onboard to properly monitor such types of risks, and if necessary, rapidly resolve the situation.

We have taken all the necessary precautions to ensure that everyone is safe. We have closely monitored spaces, evaluated everyone who has flown or worked on the flight deck and cleaned the aircraft.

I have not seen any levels of radiation or contamination that would cause me to have any significant concerns at all.

As we continue to assist Japan in this terrible catastrophe, our Sailor’s—and your loved ones’—safety will remain at the top of my priority list.

Capt. Thom Burke

Re: Japanese Nuclear Plant Disaster!!!

Randy, please tell Jarrett that he, and his entire group of fellow crew, are in my prayers!

Being there to see the suffering and devastation in person must be tough for those wonderful young men and women. We so much appreciate their dedicated service!

Re: Japanese Nuclear Plant Disaster!!!

Heard / saw this on the news last night - didn't realize Jarrett's carrier was the one the newscaster was talking about. My heart goes out to him, to you and Marge and the kids - we love all of you and want Jarrett back here, safe and sound. Please let us know of any updates the Navy might send you.

Our love and prayers,
John & Nancy

Re: Japanese Nuclear Plant Disaster!!!

Please tell Jarrett thank you for his service to our nation. We all need to be in prayer for the safety of our armed forces, this is dangerous stuff.

Our thoughts and prayers are with your family, your son and his crew, and all who serve. Thank him for his service! Prayers go out to all who are suffering in Japan.

Jarrett says that being a nuclear powered carrier, yeah they do have trained personnel on board to avert / attend to nuclear radiation hazards, BUT WTH! They parked too close to the site and the wind blew the radiation cloud onto them....then they decided to move back away from the site??? I just hope the govt isnt underplaying this for liability reasons. He also says he cant say much more than this at this time. I guess thats the part that made me wonder.

He's a "Shooter" on the USS Ronald Reagan. Yeah...Im kinda proud of him and all his shipmates.

Here's a video of what the shooters do. Dangerous but he loves it!

He is indeed - John and I were lucky enough to spend a day with the family at Christmas time, and Zook and Marge have four wonderful, intelligent, motivated, well-mannered, polite - did I say wonderful? - kids. We were fortunate to be able to meet them and spend a little time getting to know them. Jarrett, maybe, will come to UT-Austin in the near future - we can be his 'surrogate grandparents' if he does.

Randy and Marge nice looking son you have. He is having the time of his life in the military. I know it was dangerous and they might have gotten a little close, but remember the person commanding the helm was just as close. My patrol area is near a nuclear power plant we get annual training on fall out and are given the details on what to expect for exposure at what distances down wind. At 10 miles exposure is minimal except for a full blown disaster. They backed out when things started registering on their meters, which is what they should of done. It appears their normal uniform they are completely covered which lowers the danger. Concern is okay but the danger and exposure was very low. He is in allot more danger working on that flight line, but there safety is paramount. He is creating great memories for himself. Congrats to you and him for his service.

Randy, my thoughts are with Jarrett, you, and your family during this very difficult time for many. Please pass our thanks to your wonderful young man. I had no idea he was a shooter!!! Shooters are highly regarded in naval aviation--with good reason.

I feel your concern, too, because, for one thing, my nephew is still in Japan. He's pretty far south of the hazard area and the area where he lives had zero involvement in the earthquake or tsunami, but we're all still concerned about him and won't be happy until he comes home in a couple of weeks, as I know you'll feel better when you see Jarrett again.

Thanks guys and I am sure the Reagan crew is fine...just being a dad I guess and it concerned me when I first got the message This thing in Japan is really getting bad though.

Got to really feel for those people. So much damage and loss human and property.
