Has anyone installed the illuminated handlebar switches ? Aside from the coolness factor ............ Are they worth the cost. $199 at Boardtracker, $210 at Surdyke.

I have. Totally worth it to me, as I do a lot of nighttime riding. No more feeling for and guessing which switch I'm getting ready to press. Like trying to turn on bright light and scaring the crap outta myself hitting the horn button. Did that several times. Not anymore.

Yep, Every time i go for the brights i get a wakeup call from the horn...:wave4::gah::gah:

Looks like I'll try riding w/o them initially. New bars came way faster than I thought they would from Surdyke and they go on this weekend.

When you do decide to put them on, you'll be pleased. I actually got lucky--my left turn signal went bad under warranty, so it had to be replaced. A regular switchpak costs the about the same as the illuminated one, and I had been bugging the service guy about a lit one that had reverse (up until that time, they didn't make one). He suggested that I have them put it on, and only pay the difference and labor for one side. That cost was $90. I jumped on it! Haven't regretted it one bit.

Now, if you could just make something on your switchpak malfunction....

Luminated switches

I did mine in 2014 before HD even had them for sale, in fact they said they did not make them for the tri glide, but they did make them for the two wheel bagger...??? I found that the wiring in the tri glide and in the bagger switches were the same, the only diff was in the switch cover, one that let the light thru and one that did nor, betcha if you bought some switch covers for the lighted controls and replaced your stock covers, you will save yourself a couple hundred bucks and have lighted switches.

Are you saying we have illuminated switch gear with covers that don't allow the light to come throught ?

switches

Here is the full story.....When I bought my 2014 Tri I ask to have lighted switches installed prior to pick up, along with other add ons. Got the bike and rode it home and was very pleased, rode for about a week then one day tried to use the reverse button, but NO reverse, button would not move. I called the dealer, advise them of the problem and was told they don't make a lighted switch for the Tri, the part numbers they had installed on the Tri was for a two wheel bagger, lighted switches but no reverse. So I ask for a solution as the switches worked well and lit up nice at night, I just never had the white R on the reverse button, but never really thought anything of it until I got around of trying for reverse. The dealer said they would call HD and get a solution, mean while I did my own research online, looking at the stock switches, which I still had and looking at the detail pixs of lighted switches, I observed that the wiring was all the same part number for each bike, Tri or bagger...??? I also found that the bagger reverse switch has two little tabs on each side of the switch button that prevented the button from rocking to engage the reverse button within the housing. So I got to thinking about how things are made these days, same wire system, same plugs at wire ends, one part number comes with a rocking reverse switch with a white R and the other comes with switch buttons that have illuminated lettering, allow the light to pass thru, but no white R as it was made with the two little plastic tabs to keep the button from rocking to engage reverse. I says to myself, surly it can NOT be that simple, so I took a small knife popped off the no white reverse switch and cut off the tabs, put it back on and I got reverse with light switches, something HD said they didn't have. So this had taken a week so I got around checking back with the dealer and was advised that HD did not have a solution and they would put the none light switch with the working reverse button back on my TRI for no charge, so I would have lighted just on one side, that was the best HD could do. The shop manager was upset to tell me this and said he had three more trikes that wanted lighted switches but he would now have to tell them that it could not be done. I told him my solution and he could not believe that it was that simple, so he went and took the button off a lighted switch and found the tabs and just shook his head. So the light I bet is already in the wiring, but as I already had the switches installed I never investigated further. Buy a illuminated switch cover, see if it works. if so get the entire set. Now days if there ain't no part number then it won't work, that was the attitude. Same with my pull back bars, HD quoted $1600 to install the, went down the road, same bars installed without buying all the extentions for brakes, clutch etc for $450, works great but no part number to do it that way....LOL

Lighted Switch Kits For Reverse

I ordered the lighted switch kit for 2015 Touring Models (FLHTC). Part #71500248A. This kit does not have the lighted switch cap with the "R" on it. Like someone else has said there are 2 small tabs that need to be trimmed off for the cap to rock to engage the reverse switch. I trimmed the tabs and all works ok.

I was reading through the instructions and parts list for the kit and noticed the kit I received was 71500248A and the instructions showed the #71500248B which is an updated kit. Looking at the parts breakdown and list they have listed 2 switch caps. One switch cap with no 'R' and one switch cap with the "R" service part #71500426.

I sent an email to Boardtracker Harley Davidson and ask if they had the part number.

There reply was they would put it in their system.

A few day later I went on line with them and order the switch cap #71599426 for $11.00. When the switch arrived I installed it and all is good to go with the complete set of lighted switches for my 2015 Tri Glide.

What Harley did was use the older part number for the lighted switch kits but put updated instructions and parts list in the box. The new lighted switch kits now say will fit all touring and Tri Glide models 2014-up. They package the new kits with both lighted switch caps without the "R" and with the "R".

Hope this helps anyone thinking about changing their Tri Glide to lighted switches.

After rereading my post above, the Part number for the Lighted Cap Switch with the "R" is

SWITCH CAP,REVERSE,W/BACK-LIGHT - 71500426.:pepper:

I now have reverse ............. Again

Took the left switch cover off. Popped off the rocker cap and removed the tabs. At least I have the use of my reverse now. I'll order the cap with the R and horn icons tomorrow.
