I am called Onewing for a reason

:Hello,
my name is Wayne but they call me Onewing. I lost my right arm when I was 22 years old. I fell out of the moving vehicle and sustained long term nerve damage, which ended up costing me my right arm up to the shoulder. I'm 50 years old. I am married happily to my wife Patty and have a 15-year-old son Patrick . I am a drug and alcohol counselor, which came about after years of practicing as to what not to do to live well, so I being clean and sober for 13 years. Now what brought me to climbing on to a seat on a trike is because I have always been envious of people on motorcycles because it looks so fun and seemed to be the picture of freedom.......... Man it still makes me shiver thinking about riding!
Anyway about 10 years ago I moved here to Montana, and I started noticing trikes. They seem to be coming through here all summer long on their way to Sturges or across the country going somewhere. After talking to people who rode them and getting mixed reviews as to how much they liked them .

I thought I would try it for myself. I started to realize that I could probably ride a trike.
So of course I started looking on eBay and after a while I decided that is how I'm going to end up retiring is buying a brand-new trike, and loading up the wife on the back and going out and seeing the a lot of country instead of locking ourselves in a motorhome and going off and seeing a little bit of the country .
So I started talking about it with another individual who is a motorcycle enthusiast and he let m know that he was selling his motorcycle and would be upgrading to a newer Harley-Davidson. So I made the decision to go ahead and by his motorcycle and try to get a trike kit for it to see if I actually wanted to or was able to ride a trike. So I went and bought his 2002 Suzuki intruder 1500 LC and boy was I excited. But imagine what people are thinking"Why would a one arm guy buy such a big motorcycle that he can't ride?" I started praying to my higher power not let me down and that I would be able to ride a motorcycle/trike soon.
So what a coincidence..........A good friend of mine who is probably the best motorcycle mechanic/customizer I know in this part of the country called me out of the blue and informed me that he heard I was looking for a trike kit and he had just bought Harley fat boy, for somebody, but it had a Voyager kit bolted to it and they wanted to get rid of it and would I be interested. I could hardly contain myself ! I went ahead and got it and my friend agreed to install it.
After fabricating a new belly plate for this Suzuki (my friend did a great job), I went out to test it out on the motorcycle and realized the throttle was a problem, right hand side........ big problem!
So again I trusted and prayed like crazy and my fabricating friend called me back and stated he had tried several different things (ATV throttle, switching it from right to lefe ,but it would be upside down, etc, etc) but he finallyy figured it out after taking a cable driven gas pedal from one of his street rods projects and he installed it on the right side floorboard of the trike. He was pretty excited as to how well it turned out!
I have to say the first time I climbed on it reached over and hit that start switch, feathered that gas pedal, pulled the clutch in with my left hand, shifted into first, and gunned it, it shot me down the road, and now I understand exhilaration of riding motorcycles!! I'm hooked !! So anyway, that's who I am a thats why i am on a trike. I will put some photos on soon,
Onewing,

I'm missing some parts too! Both legs below knee from a work related railway accident when I was 20.

I got tired of taking my "normie" buddies money on the golf course and had a trike conversion done.
It has a Kliktronic shifter and front and rear brakes are both controlled by the front brake lever. I absolutely love riding and ride pretty much year round here in Victoria, BC Canada.

I'm 56 now and retired but I have a hobby retirement job detailing motorcycles.

The trike has really messed up my golf game though!

Good on you for pursuing your dreams! Awesome.ThumbUp

I would love to see some pictures of the set up and the trike . Welcome aboard. Those that do not ride do not understand, and never will understand why we ride , but now u do.

Welcome Onewing from SE Tennessee. What an awesome story! I have a girl friend in LA that lost her arm in an accident. She had her bike (two wheels) modified so we could continue to ride. She ended up getting it changed to automatic so she wouldn't have to change gears! Maybe you wife will learn to ride so she can give you some relief on longer trips. Ride safe and congrats on the new ride! Looking forward to pics.
