Police: Blizzard Conditions Contribute to Multi-Vehicle Crashes on Interstate 80 in Wyoming

At least six people were critically injured Thursday after a 45-vehicle pile-up on a snowy Interstate 80 between Laramie and Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Speeds too fast for the blizzard conditions and loss of control are being investigated as contributing factors in the crashes that caused a "domino"-style chain reaction after the first couple of vehicles lost control, the Wyoming Highway Patrol said on its Facebook page.

Sixteen people were transported by ambulance and 11 others were taken by school bus to the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, the Highway Patrol said. Between 11 a.m. and noon MDT Thursday, it was snowing between Cheyenne and Laramie with visibility down to one-quarter mile, AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Mike Doll said. "Temperatures were between 29 and 32 degrees," Doll said. "Winds were out of the north, which is a cross wind along that stretch of I-80, with gusts as high as 40 mph."

There were three separate crash scenes, which occurred around 11:20 a.m. MDT Thursday, according to authorities. The eastbound lanes of the interstate from Cheyenne to Rawlins remained closed Friday morning, the Wyoming Department of Transportation reported on its website. In addition to the highway patrol, Laramie County Sheriff's Office, Albany County Sheriff's Office, Wyoming Office of Homeland Security, Laramie County and City of Laramie firefighters and Wyoming National Guard First Responders assisted at the scene.

I don't know what it is about some folks they just don't understand you can't drive in snow like it is when it's dry.
We don't get much but they do the same thing here in Alabama.

BEING FROM UTAH YOU WELL KNOW THE SCORE!

this section of I-80 is notorious for this type of scene every year.
There's noting at all out there to slow the wind but a few strands of barbed wire.
Once the wet spring snows start and freezes and thaws everyday you take your life in your own hands driving this section of highway. Its a main trucking route in this part of the country and is dangerous in the summer?

I have been forced to park my truck at little America for three days at a time and guaranteed your trucking company aint gonna like it!

It's a catch twenty two situation, the road isn't closed and trucking law says you don't have to drive in unsafe conditions, but the company says if something's moving on the highway you will run.

Whalla! instant recipe for what the photo shows happening at least a few times every year. usually accompanied by fatalities and its always set off by trucks. Go figure?

God I love Wyoming!

At least in Utah you have slower speed limits for trucks wich might help.

The Navy I was in taught there is a wrong way, a right way, and a Navy way. You better damn well do it the Navy way. Also there is no such thing as an accident, only premeditated carelessness. DD214 Jan 30th 1961.:)
