HOW much $$$$

I just got my 2003 GL1800 last week end. State Farm, with whom I have my home, 2 cars & another Yamaha FJR bike, is charging me $484 / yr with a $500 deductable. They insist the trike aspect makes no difference. I had read this thread while in the process of buying, so I tried to hammer it home: Trike NOT bike. Made no difference....at least till I have to file a claim, which God willing ain't never gonna happen!!!

In the Republic of Texas, at least, State Farm considers the trike kit to be an accessory. My agent wanted to know the purchase price of the accessories and based his quote for coverage on the total cost of replacement. I am not including the amount I pay per 6 month period because my cost would have no real bearing on what you would pay. There are far too many variables...

Tango,

I have sent you a PM. Please check it out.

Dave we signed the papers and gave a deposit. So I tried my agent to see who they write for. They came back with a quote from Progressive no less, $900/yr. Trike value $42,000 with full ABS and airbag. Ouch again. They also write for Foremost. They said wait till after the first of the year. Probably will not get the trike till late Jan.- early Feb.. Will also try the local State Farm Agent in town. PA. must be a different animal with trike ins.. And that was with $500 deductible collision fire and theft. And $500,000 liability. Tom:eek:

Also in Pa., the trike kit is an accessory.

You are absolutely correct. My trike is insured as a motorcycle and all the rest are add-ons. I very carefully documented the value of all those "accessories" and they are insured at fulll replacement value.

I also sent you another PM with some additional information.

Dave very much appreciated! Thanks for the info. Tom :)

Just received a quote from my agent using Foremost. For 250,000-500,00 and 100,000 property, fire, theft, collision with $250 deduc., towing and road service. ACV 0f $42,000, plus $3500 in Accessory coverage.. $463.... Tom

Insurance companies are just like slick used car salesman! They will take you for a loop first opportunity they get. Remember to be very specific with what coverage you want. Get an agreed upon price for your trike, and remember full coverage for your trike isn't like for your car. They don't pay your medical bills if you go down! You need extra coverage for that. I know first hand!

If you live in Calif. they really stick it to you. 2009 stallion trike. Over 900.00 a year through Progressive. Clean record/multi bike. They said the high price is due to the 2.3 liter engine (2300 cc)

rudedogg welcome aboard. Your correct about the sticking it to you, Progressive here in Florida on my wifes Stallion and the annual is $748

Did some research today......and join USAA (anyone with prior military service or family member who is already a member can join. I received a quote of 303.00 every six months that's with 100,000/300,000 liability full coverage....signing up this week:yes:

Great saving 1/3 less. I'll check when mine comes up in a couple of months. Thanks, Ted

I would be interested in how much coverage you are getting and how much a year you are paying . I am covered as a TRIKE by Progressive for $18,000 on a 1997 Goldwing $500 dedutable and $515 a year.
MHO if you are paying much under $300.00 a year I would recheck on it.
I am in Conn. and everything is higher here.

I have a 2003 goldwing trike and progressive I live in ct. and pay $560.00 a year

Your experience and John's illustrate that every case is different, even within a specific state.

just got it from foremost $416 a year got @100/300 bodily and liability
100/300 uninsured @250 dedutable bike ins.for $25000 and I live in conn.check them out progressive was way too high

Just got a quote from Markel Insurance .. My trike DFT 1997 Goldwing ( $17,000 value )and the 1986 500 Shadow ( just liability coverage ) was $675. Progressive is now $605 . Of course if I didn't have $3,000 in accessories, didn't want uninsured motorist ( required in CT )and didn't want collision or pass insurance or towing , Life insurance or any thing but Liability it would have been $345.00 ... Min insurance on my 1986 500 Honda Shadow ( $1,200 value ) with 2 bike discount and GWRRA discount $89.00 so $155.00 for a trike is Real cheap

If you have stacking insurance on your car/truck, you get skip it on your motorcycle. I found that out from my lawyer after I was hit by someone. With that said, I pay under $600 for the stallion and a M109R for the year thru progressive here in central Florida.
