Hot Weather attire

I'm looking at making my first "short " trip in this hot GA weather. My wife on the back of my 02 Gl800 Roadsmith trike.

What do you wear on Hot days. I know I'm not supposed to but around town I wear shorts and a tshirt, crocks with heavy socks. So I don't need scolding for that.

I have winter riding gear, but not summer. This will be a trip from 100 degree Augusta GA to Cherokee NC, over 4 hours the way I drive. I have never made a trip to the Smokies and it will largely be a day trip, possibly turning into an overnight at a friends house at Lake Chatuge.

I know sunburn and windburn and dehydration from insensible waterloss is possible and needs to be prevented.

What do you wear in these conditions?

As others have stated, I too will not travel for longer than just a few minutes around town without a long sleeve T shirt. I Never travel in shorts, that would be scary and don't own a pair of crocks. I always wear gloves and at least some kind of helmet. I do cover up on the road though it will keep you cooler and make for a more comfortable ride. I used to live in GA as well and know things can get hot there and I have also ridden coast to coast along the Mexican, American boarder so I know what hot riding is all about and always worn a long sleeve T shirt but then again I cook more than usual in the sun.

Yup, paradoxically long sleeves are cooler. A light button up shirt seems to be cooler than a cotton t-shirt, but I have a moisture wicking long sleeve shirt that looks like a t-shirt, and on really hot days I add an evaporative cool vest. I use the evaporative vest because I can add water to it anywhere and don't have to have a cooler to recharge the phase-change type inserts. It feels a little clammy if it is too wet, but it does cool. We also use the cooling bandanas referred to above, ours are Frogg Toggs chilly Pads, about the same as the ones Lucky mentioned.

Me and the missus stay covered. Long jeans, long sleeve shirts, gloves and boots. Plenty of sunscreen on the face and water for hydration. My favorite shirt is a moisture wicking Carhart neon green long sleeve. It gets warm around town but once on the road its very comfortable to ride in.

Do I see an overwhelming consensus here??? Normal head, hand, and foot protection but keep those arms covered. I do long sleeve Tee Shirts year around but some of my friends do button up shirts. Both seem to protect your arms from the sun so go whatever way you are inclined. :xszpv::xszpv:

Academy Sports sells a shirt by Magellan that is suppose to be nice. A couple of the guys I ride with use them. Sleeves roll up with buttons to hold in place and have flow through ventilation.

If I had to wear all the clothes some of these good folks are wearing, I'd quit riding. If your trip is only 4 hrs long, I sure wouldn't worry much about it. Wear what you feel comfortable in, but just plan on taking several bottles of water. Put it on your bike buoy and drink often. Use sun screen, especially if your skin isn't used to the sun or you have little tan, and I would suggest wearing shirts that are light in color. Black is a no no. It will burn you up. Some of these new fabrics are great for riding in hot weather and help you stay cool. Enjoy your trip.

Yep, I "used" the Magellan shirts from Acadamy sports also. With the trike sold I use them when working in the yard. Charley

I wear a pull over short sleeve polo type shirt. I put on a white long sleeve button down shirt over it when I get ready to ride. Just like a jacket I guess.
That way when I get to where I'm going I simply take off the long sleeve shirt.
It's been working for me for 35 years.

I've heared of some riders even using camel back with ice and cold water, or just ice worked around in front like a vest, but gotta have an XXL mesh jack to go over the thing, or nothing. I hear it works both ways. Having said that, I haven't tried it, but I might if it gets hot enough on a long ride. I can visualize it would be situational inconvenience at a stop.
