My wife and I were coming home from the grocery store on our trike when a dog came running out on the road. He ran parallel to us for just a little bit and all of a sudden swerved into the trike. I didn't see what happened but it felt like we ran over him.

I looked in the rear view mirror and he got up and ran off the road. We turned around and tried to find him, but no luck. The area is a combination of houses and empty lots.

It was a sickening feeling, but I was sure thankful that we were on a trike. I don't know what would have happened on a bike.

A friend of mine was riding a bike when a dog ran out in front of him. He went over the handlebars and had to be airlifted to a trauma center. It probably took him a year to fully recover from the internal injuries.

Yikes! So glad you are safe, and also glad the dog seems to have been able to get away from the road afterward. Hopefully his injuries were very minor and he simply learned a painful lesson!

Glad it turned out good for you and the wife, people should keep their animals under control. I've had to deal with dogs chasing me in the past. I normally accelerate away from them after gaging their line to make sure their not going to be where they can turn into me as I make my get away.

That is the technique I use, too. I beleive the MSF also teaches this strategy in their courses.

Thankfully you and your wife are fine, and so it seems, so is the dog. I hit a squirrel with my trike last fall, felt terrible. On my way back, it was still there, squashed. Out here in Wisconsin, we always are on watch for deer. I feel better I'm on three stable wheels now but still would never want to hit anything larger than,, well, a squirrel.

Animals have been a demise for me. Three years ago I swerved to miss a dog, it was raining, and I lost my rear wheel and the bike went down on my right leg. Both bones in my lower leg were shatterd, as well as my ankle, and the exhaust burned it severely.
It has a lot to do with me having a trike now, although I still ride two wheels about 1/2 the time. Five years ago a deer hit me on my roadking, in a canyon outside of Sturgis (Spearfish), but I got lucky and almost got stopped before I laid the bike down.
I actually ran over a terrier eight years ago, he ran right in front of me and I could not stop-very sad day. I did not lose control of the bike-but the cute little dog was killed.:AGGHH:
