On my 89 yamaha venture royale 1300 trike I shift into fifth running round 65 the Rpm is running at 4000 or close...is this normal seems high to me

Brandy,
4000 RPMs is at the lower end of the power range for the Venture Royal. These bikes come alive at 4500 RPMs, so for your bike/trike it is best to keep it in that range.

Brandy read what other Yamaha Venture Trike owners have to say about the same questions you have on RPM range HERE.

My son has a Suzuki 1500 Boss - we discovered the same thing. When we first got is we noticed it lugged when we went to those higher gears. 3rd gear went a long way. 4th gear at 55 - 65. Then really cruising for 5th gear.

My CSC Harley trike has performed well. If I am around town, up to say 50, I am still in 4th gear. Usually hit 5th after that and run it to about 62 or so. I also watch mt RPMs - when I began to jump over 3000, it is time to change gears.

For me, the bike runs that much smoother. Overall, still get about 40 mpg and that is 2 up with the heavy trike conversion.
