Heat shields on mufflers

I recently had my 2010 CVO Ultra converted with a Hannigan kit. The heat shields are still on the mufflers but are no longer exposed of course. Can you help me with Pro's and Con's of leaving the shields on or taking them off. Thanks

I've wondered about that myself. Only reason I can think of for them still being there is to protect the running boards from excessive heat. Maybe the Hannigan folks had a good reason for leaving them on that we haven't considered.

But, they do seem to be unnecessary with the trike conversion.

The mufflers will usually turn blue at some point and the covers will hide that, otherwise you can remove them and get better mileage

I'm assuming your talking about the decorative shields they put on the mufflers of the CVO bikes? I can't think of any real pro's to keep them on, con is crap will get under the shield and be tough to clean out now it is a trike.

Yes those are the ones I was talking about. Not sure if the Tri-Glides come with shields or not. Harley dealer said they would help dissipate the heat faster but I know I dissipate heat faster without a jacket on!

Back in early 2012 I got a set of CVO slipons from my local dealer that were off of a brand new 2012 CVO Ultra. The buyer had true duals and V&H slipons put on his CVO. The dealer sold them to me for $150. so I had them installed along with a Stage 1 A/C and tuner. Mechanic left the heat shields on and I debated about taking them off or leaving them on. Ended up I figured it would not really make a lot of difference either way as they are not really visible and would just be a PITA to crawl under there to remove them. Besides, as Trent would say: "More Chrome the faster the trike."

Tri Glides come with heat shields, And that's what there for ,To shield things from heat[burns] like skin and clothing.
That said if the pipes are out of the way of stuff that burns, Then there just cosmetic, and tend to rattle when the clamps loosen from heat...

The Triglide doesn't come with shields on the mufflers, their purely decorative.

Thanks for you input everyone. I'm going to take them off and then I am able to polish and clean the entire muffler. Hey need something to do in man den as I watch the snow fall. Thank god Florida is only a month away now. Already booked into Doc's Performance in Mineola for her annual tune and this will be her first since being Triked.

Doc's a good egg and does top notch work.

I could not agree more on Doc's work. I spent a day with him last Feb while he installed TTS Master Tune, Fullsac headers, muffler cores plus the heavy breather. He then dynode the bike. I could not believe the difference in the bike after he was done. The bike also now runs cool as a cucumber with all those heat issues gone. I can remember when it was stock and I pulled it back in the garage after a run, it would pop and crackle for 10min as it dissipated the heat. Now not a peep out of it. Highly recommend Doc's work. He knows his stuff.
