HD Warranty?

So, what's the REAL scoop on the HD trike warranty? I've seen several references to voiding the warranty for different "offenses" like adding a trailer hitch or other non-HD accessories. This is my first Harley-Davidson, and I don't want to screw up the warranty on my new Tri-Glide...

As plain as can be stated:
Any modification made or accessory added that is:
1. Not manufacturer approved
and
2. Not added or performed by a certified tech at an authorized dealer can void the warranty.
Usually not the whole warranty. However, if said accessory or modification, not conforming to #1 and/or #2 above can be cause of said failure that warranty claim may be denied!
Having said all that, a lot depends on the dealer where you purchased your bike and accessories or what mods that dealer made which may not be manufacturer approved.Yes, most dealers do sell accessories that are not manufacturer approved!!

Agree with above. My dealer will take, and reinstall my hitch, if factory rep needs to take a look. Probably would be the same Corporate service rep moron who threatened to void my warranty while at the dealer during the 110th, getting a trailer & hitch installed, if he found out what I was doing, knowing my luck. My Sailor mouth came out of me, while I was telling him how to go North, back to Milwaukee!!

It states about voiding the extended warranty on the back of that contract. Can't recall any print about the standard 2 year warranty. Again, most dealers that you deal with, will help you out. They don't want to lose a customer. Out of town, they might get brownie points for turning you in.

(Hope that rep isn't trolling, and see my pic)

:Agree: The rep can make life pretty tough if they have a mind to. Unfortunately there are warranty repairs a rep has to come out and approve, this is when things can get ugly. My dad run in to this very thing some years back. His 09 was using SE255 cams and a SEPST, his trike would buck and back fire at times in the 2,500 rpm area. The dealer couldn't figure it out, the rep was called in and the 1st thing the service manager said was we installed the cams and not them. The rep said game over and good by powertrain warranty. It turned out to be an O2 sensor which was coming and going, another dealer found it when they put the trike on a Dyno.

They can void your warranty for just about anything. I dated a young lady that had MS and needed a walker to get around. I installed a trailer hitch and had one of our local custom bike builders design a custom receiver bicycle rack to carry her walker. Worked great !!! Then a factory rep saw it while we were having the belt tightened at a dealership on a road trip....flagged it "voided warranty". I questioned his decision because it put NO strain or wear on ANYTHING. Nothing I said helped... I tried to be calm and rational about the whole matter but in the end the GF finally wished MS on him and his family, to his face.

Like I said they can void it for ANYTHING..

I think I would take your issue directly to the upper management of Harley. They are a big financial supporter of MD research and I would think that they might be a little sensitive to what would be perceived by most ALL OF US as a BIG BAD decision by a regional rep. After all trikes were originally perceived as a means for physically challenged individuals to enjoy riding. Walkers, Wheelchairs etc. need to be able to be allowed to be mounted somewhere. HARLEY IF YOU READ THIS CORRECT THIS POOR DECISION

I know for a fact that the Harley TriGlide production manager is a registered member here so maybe he will read this. Most of the Harley brass reads here too, this I know for a fact. I hope they listen.

This whole issue is somewhat of a mute issue now. That was on my '10 Ultra, 2 GF's and a wife ago, also prior to buying my TG. What I did was install a Spalding sidecar (350#) and nothing was ever mentioned again. 350# plus 120# GF with MS in a sidecar, putting pressure on drive train and what ever else and not a word. HD even sells a heavy duty drive belt to take some of the pressure. And a 25# hitch and walker "voids my warranty"........ ??????? Ohhhh and just a side bar, need a good trailer hitch the HD dealerships will sell you one from 2-3 different vendors they have catalogs from on their parts counters.

I did talk to HD customer service here while back, maybe 3 months ago, and presented the same details......same response "voided warranty". Young lady indicated that basically, if HD hasn't tested it, it would "void the warranty". Like I originally stated "they can void your warranty for anything".

Remember when you voided your warranty if you used synthetic oil.......once they got their own syn oil and TESTED IT I guess, it was sold to the public.

Is this a touchy subject with me....you dang toot'n...

Now that I finally have my trike, I've been reading through the owner's manuals, and at least half a dozen times in different chapters I have seen the warning about not towing a trailer. It seems that they are really serious about if for now. I guess we'll have to wait until they come out with a "genuine Harley" trailer before they allow you to mount a hitch.

It seems Sometimes just asking ''Will this void my Warranty''
Will void your Warranty..:D

Only if they have Harley oil in the shocks....

a lot of time warrantees and guarantees are dodgy to say the best .. companys promise the earth, but deliver whats below the earth (metaphorically speaking) they have an army of people to lo for a loophole out of paying.. and HD seems to employ the best evaders..
i would say the main difference between any guarantee, and toilet paper is perforations . lol

That's the part that ticks me off. Local dealer will take care of me, but, on a trip, I would probably get flagged in the computer.
Debating right now on possibly canceling the extended warranty, before it kicks in.

I know they won't volunteer a refund. My dad had several things repaired on his 09 under extended warranty while Harley had flagged his powertrain warranty a couple years prior. The biggest hoop to jump through is the dealer who does the work. If they are cool with any modifications they see and turn a blind eye, all is well. If they want to be a dick about it, game over. One dealer who worked on his 09 Triglide was 1,400 miles from home, they didn't blink an eye when they heard it running, which once you did you knew it had engine work done to it. The other dealer is about 90 miles from home, the service manager didn't car either.

He said they don't sweat modifications unless they caused the problem, but then they sell a lot of modified and dyno tuned bikes.

Any warranty is only as good as the Dealer honoring it. I can't understand why any dealer would refuse to do warranty work. If I was the service writer .... "Mr Jones .... would you please remove the trailer hitch from your trike .... then bring it back and we will make your repairs."

Hell .... Way back ....When I worked at a HD Dealer, we looked for anything we could charge up under warranty and get away with it!

In my area of PA we have a crap load of Dealers ..... and they all know that if they piss a customer off they are gone! I've got 5 dealers within a one hour drive .... and probably 12 within 2 hours ....

and I LIKE RIDING. :D

Great post BOB. Good dealers would do that - crappy ones wouldn't.

FuzzyWuzHe,

Look at your extended warranty contract. Don't have mine right now, but it says something to the effect in the dos and don'ts, that it can not be fitted to use for towing. The hitch can be used for towing. It's a crap shoot with HD.

My local dealer said I could try writing to the MotorCo and asking them if I could use a hitch ONLY for parade flag use.

Not so sure I want to open that can. :xzqxz:
