Our HD trike sits so low I have to run it up a couple of (staggered)2X6's to be able to get my head under the trunk.

Is it a "live" rear axle? It seems there must be something that the axles connect to that would keep the inside wheel from having to turn as much as the outside wheel in a turn. Am I missing something?

If your talking about the TG, I believe it's an open differential, if one wheel spins all the power went to the wheel that spinning or if a wheel is in the air then all the power goes to the wheel thats in the air.

if you put air in the shocks the rear end goes up higher also..If you put on the lift brackets it will go higher when shocks are filled up..

+1 Its an open differential.

It could be that your question was misleading. A live axle usually refers to the standard solid beam axles we're used to seeing on rear wheel drive cars, as opposed to independent rear suspension. The word "live" designates it as a driving axle as opposed to a dead axle that just coasts along as on a trailer.

Either solid beam or IRS drives can be equipped with open or limited slip type differentials. Apparently HD chose an open differential to keep things on the safer side as a limited slip type can surprise under certain conditions.

School's out.

Know about the lift kits, was more interested in the type of rear end they use.

The Tri Glide uses a Differential, It is not a locked rear like the ATC's had.
And there's no way you can sell a vehicle for street use with a locked rear.
I had 3 Honda big red's they had locked rears, Can't tell you how easy they would flip on dirt let alone on pavement. That's why there no more.:Trike1:

Grapenuts, Yer probably right about not asking the right question. So, does the TG use a dead axle? That's the way it looks to me after finally finding a SM.
