Cocoa, FL.
I have a 2006 GL1800 Trike and with 30,000 miles and it tries to pop out of 5th gear. I took it to Honda and they tell me I need to have the transmission rebuilt at $3500, has anyone had this problem and what did you do?

There was a few problems around that year where the shift forks were not heat treated

properly. I know of one person who had the transmission rebuilt under warranty. (TWO wheels--2008 model)

Good luck---you have a TRIKE.

I had a 2005 GL1800 that needed the transmission rebuilt at a cost of $3400 the bike had 29000 miles on it and it was just 2months out of the warrantee and it was not covered. It turned out to be bent/warn shifting forks. It would not shift into 5th gear and eventually 4th gear.
Good luck on the repair.

Be a little patient before dropping that $$$$$ for a rebuild. My '06 has done that for years and it's still going strong. I think what you are experiencing is what some call "Ghost Shifting." I believe it's just the transmission not fully engaging the gears. Yes, it's probably a worn or slightly bent shift fork but I've learned to recognize the feeling of the shift peddle when it's not fully engaged. Also you'll notice the "OD" symbol does not light up until it is fully engaged so that might help you. I think the problem rears it's ugly head most often during hard shifting so I try to preload the peddle and sort of slide into 5th instead of sticking it hard.
Hope that helps....

You should go to GL1800riders.com and in their general forum, search for "ghost shifting" and there are a couple extremely long threads on it. There is a shop that specializes in rebuilding the trannies with better beefed up gears.

Mine occasionally pops out of 4th gear.
The good old "ghost shift".
While not acceptable it happens so infrequently. Im not terribly concerned.
Ive been told true or not.
A lot of GWs might have slightly bent shift forks. Im not aware of what years this covers.
Causing the 4th and 5th gear issues.

While I don't and would not spend $3500 unless I absolutely had to.
Fortunately Im still under an extended warranty and if it becomes a larger issue I will address it at the right time.
Same way I did with my driveshaft issue. That was taken care of 3 weeks ago.
My MT warranty is up sometime in October.
As your out of warranty Id be rather hesitant to spend the money unless its happening a lot.
Good Luck to you resolving this problem.

GoldwingGreg does at times make some statements off the wall. Having said that, he gets a lot of unwarranted grief from some on that site. I have followed most of his posts for a long time and have no doubt that he knows goldwing transmissions. Other things I am not sure about. I would not hesitate to have him repair my transmission if needed. I feel that he is particular with his work and will stand behind it. Just my opinion with no evidence to back it up other than what I have read.
