Gearing question

I have a ‘20 Tri Glide and while traveling at highway speeds it feels like it needs another gear. Came from a ‘12 Limited 103 with a stage 1 and a tuner. Let me know know your thoughts and/or solutions.

Thanks,

Davey

I agree with you. The Trikes are geared lower than the 2 wheel models. This was probably appropriate for most folks with Twin Cams, but it does not seem like the M8's need the lower gearing.

Either a pulley can be changed out, or larger diameter rear tires can be used to get the gearing higher on the M8's.

All the above is my untested opinion. I have not done it myself yet, but anticipate that I will.

Like Kevin just posted. I have changed a pulley on the 16 I had. NOT FUN.. Tires maybe ,of course with either speedo will be off,so plan on adding an adapter to correct . Also if you go the pulley way DIY there are several tools to buy. I bought them & have never used since. If you decide DIY, you can buy mine cheaper than new. ;) Of course I was younger when I did the change, now it takes longer to recuperate for me from being on a cement floor too long. Best of Luck on whatever U decide, if you go the tire route, let us know the size you get & how it works out.

I had put 215/70/15 on my 2020 it dropped the RPM by about 300, Taking off was still good, I did not think it helped the handling on mine, I had stock triple trees.

WHAT!? You got rid of the trike after all that work!?

YUP Traded for a Indian At MOM'S in Manchester N H, So far it's been great, I think The Indians are year's ahead of harley, it has a C S C kit with independent suspension, my harley had more balls than the Indian butt I had about $8000. in the motor exhaust and tuner, I spent about $1800. on the Indian Stage 1 & stage 2 including cams, throttle body, injector's, air cleaner, and tune, dealer installed so no warranty issues

Sounds interesting. What's the color..black? Size of motor?

Sorry about the post hijack. :(

Your tachometer tells the full story if you need a additional gear, which you don't.

I think I have to agree. I'm riding a 2018 stock 107 and it flat out cruises in 6th. I don't think I've topped 100 yet, but I've surely been in the 90s. 6th gear at 4k gets you what? 80 to 85 mph?

My thought is that I would like to cruise at 75-80 mph with the RPM at 3K or a bit under.

W/ the Performance Plus Stage I, at 3K it has plenty of power and I don't believe it would lug at all at 75-80 in 6th. That would give me a little better MPG and a little less heat/wear & tear when chewing up interstate miles.
