Front Trike Tires

I am convinced that the OE tire on my trike is causing some handling issues . I know many use the MPA mounted in reverse on their trikes and my trike installer will not mount in due to legal issues mounting a rear tire on the front. I completely understand his point. I can still get one but I am checking my options. How does the Bridgestone Battlax BT45R compare to the MPA? Is this a true Trike Front Tire? Also I have found out from a tire source that the Avon Cobra Front Trike Tire will be released on 5/15 for sale. Any input would be great.

BT45R is a Radial not a Bias Ply.... The Avon Trike Tire has been out for a number of months and there are many Threads on here and other forums about that specific tire... make sure you order the correct tire by the right number all Avon tires are not created equal... just FYI

I have the Michelin Pilot Activ mounted in reverse and has 4000 miles on it and no signs of wear. The OEM tire would be about gone with that many miles. Here is the Avon Trike Tire site.

I believe that the BT45 is also a rear tire. At least the one on my GL1800 is. So your installer likely won't mount it either.

Might want to have a more serious discussion with "Your" Dealer, or find a Dealer that feels more "Warm-n-Fuzzy" to You and call Them "Your" Dealer thereafter. I used up 3 Michelin Pilot Activ Rear Tires mounted on the front of my Gold Wing Motor Trike. Two were mounted straight up, one mounted in reverse just for comparison. I ride nearly all twisties in this Area and pulled all of them off around 15,000 miles. Still had lots of tread (2 of them I gave to Other Members here after removing them...Both are still running them with the closest here having about 23,000 on it now), but were starting to cup which I find aggravating when riding aggressively in twisties. Stock Dunlop Gold Wing Tire wore completely at 4000 miles barely getting me home from the 2010 TRIKE TALK RALLY IN THE VALLEY in Maggie Valley, NC.....have that Dealer Talk....ThumbUp

I agree...time to find a new dealer.
Skuuter, how did the mounting direction compare? More life one way than the other? I have my MPA mounted in reverse...which was a mistake as I told my buddy (who has a tire machine) to put in on in normal rotation. He goofed, and I wasn't going to make him redo it. But am interested in your results.

Both the MPA and BT-45 are biased ply rear, sport bike tires. Your dealer is an idiot! I ran both in forward and reversed rotation and settled on forward for water dispersal and better running as tread was designed to roll in the forward direction. I preferred the BT-45 as the MPA always had a high frequency vibration.

I now run the Avon Cobra Trike Tire. It is a radial and the ride and handling in my opinion is far superior to the bias ply tires. It has a flatter profile and hopefully I will get improved longevity from it. However, even if it just matches the MPA and BT-45 in mileage I will buy the Avon again for the better ride and handling. So far I'm loving it with about 2000 miles on it. BTW, the designation is now the AM-71 Avon Cobra Trike which embossed on sidewall of tire. According to Avon rep, run at 40-42 psi.

Avon Cobra Trike is Great

I agree with MH. The ride and handling of the Cobra Trike is excellent. I only have 300 miles on it, but I knew on the way home that the Cobra Trike was a winner. Mileage is yet to be determined. I hit the wear bars on the OEM B-Stone at 8,000 miles. Not much can be worse.

I just had the new Avon trike tire mounted on my GL1500SE Motor trike but have yet to have a chance to try it, one of the bearings felt ify to me so I decided to change them out and of coarse the Honda dealer didn't have them in stock, imagine that, so I ordered them from an online parts dealer who could get them to me faster than the dealer could get them. Can't wait to try the tire out.

Same mileage before any cupping, but I prefer straight up. Tire sheds water better mounted straight up. When mounted in reverse the tire has a much noisier "road buzz".....ThumbUp
