Freewheeler Harley Speakers Have Started to Flake

My wife was loading her 2015 Freewheeler this morning during our road trip and she noticed the chrome on her dealer installed Harley speakers have begun to flake.They are the ones that plug into her Iphone and not the new bluetooth ones. Never saw this before. Could it have been caused by high heat while riding? Any ideas? Also, any advice on how to paint them?

I doubt it has to do with heat, probably just a bad chrome job. There are some rattle can paint products that look nearly like chrome, but if you're painting them you don't have to go with chrome. There are many colors that would look good. Just get the surface prepped well, should turn out nice.

You live on the ocean. I lived there for a while when going to school. Very salty air climate .
