OK Gang, I have had my FW for a year and thought I would post a few comments. Due to a lot of rain around here during 2015 I have only managed to put just under 9,000 miles on it; normally I ride 12K - 15K a year.

1) Performance is very good IMO. The bike is still stock and I am still quite happy with the performance, even riding 2 up. The gearing is a bit tall but I don't really have a problem with it. I have spent a fortune on my other bikes (15 different bikes) boosting the performance but so far I am happy with the FW. May change exhaust and air cleaner and add a tuner next year but that would be it.

2) Exhaust - this is the best sounding Harley OEM Exhaust I have heard. I have changed it out with a couple of sets of slip on mufflers I have in the garage but have now put the stock mufflers back on it. Others were too loud and droned on the highway. Maybe I am just getting too old?

3) Gas mileage is good for a trike. I get 32 - 35 routinely riding single or 2 up in the 60 - 65 MPH range. If I run 70 - 80 MPH it will be anywhere from 28 to 32 depending on terrain and wind. Only other trike I had, a Gl1800 with a MotorTrike conversion, got about 32 tops. Usually on the road at 70 MPH it was 28 to 30.

4) Comfort - This is a mixed bag. On rough roads it is not good but on good roads I am happy with the ride. The wife says it is comfortable enough for her but we haven't been on any long trips, just day rides and one 3 day trip covering about 750 miles to the Texas Hill Country. I changed out the stock seat to a Sundowner seat, added a gel pad to it and then bought a Mustang seat as soon as one was available for the Freewheeler and am now happy with the seat. My next project is to fab a different passenger backrest that will move it back about 2 inches. The OEM passenger backrest is too far forward. It can be moved back 2 - 3 inches and still allow the trunk to open. My biggest complaint now is too much wind buffeting. I have the 20" windshield plus a Laminar Lip extension, bring it up to about 22" tall but too much wind comes up under the windshield. After several bikes with fairings this is not very comfortable. Will add fork mounted wind deflectors to see if this helps. I have the HD soft lower fairings that slip onto the crash bars but they don't solve the issue and you shouldn't run them in warm weather.

5) Handling is great, the bike is very quick to respond and the 2 wheelers I ride with have a hard time keeping up with me through the curves. I ride pretty aggressively and I have never pulled a back wheel off the ground (yet). Braking is very good even 2 up.

6) Luggage capacity is limited. On the one 3 day trip we had enough room with the trunk and a bag on the luggage rack but for a long trip it is not enough. Before a longer trip I will add a hitch so that I can use a hitch rack and bag that I have. I have pulled a trailer with other bikes but I don't plan on doing that again.

7) Dependability - So far I have not had a single issue (wouldn't expect to in a year and only 9,000 miles).

8) Overall quality of the bike is very good. Fit and finish, paint, chrome, etc. etc. is all top notch IMO. The lack of accessories available through Harley is aggravating.

Would I buy it again? Maybe. If the wife and I were still doing a lot of long trips, probably not but it is a heck of a lot of fun to ride. My biggest complaint is still the lack of wind protection, it is quite annoying. I don't remember my other bikes with only a windshield having this much wind buffeting but that was a few years ago.

Just my thoughts. Would be interesting to hear other FW owner thoughts.

Any serious consideration about going with one of the lower-cost batwing fairings, like a Memphis Shades unit? One of those along with a pair of fork fangs would solve most of the wind management problems.

I have thought about a fairing but haven't decided yet if I want to keep throwing money into this bike or make a change. Will have to consider all the good and bad points and make a decision after the first of the year. I actually having a fairing in the garage off of one of my old Harleys and may see if I could make it fit on the FW. Then all I would need to do is paint it.

After a year and 16k miles I agree with much of your comments with following notes:
I use a Klockwerks 16 in windshield and have found a big decrease in buffeting. Seems my issue there is now mostly from the sides of the tank.
I ride solo and am quite satisfied with the stock seat, must be my fat a$$. But I am looking at the Ultimate Seat backrest especially after the new handlebars which are great for me.
Like you, I tried several slip on muffs and returned to stock, although I ended up drilling 8 holes around the inner ends, about a half inch each and am happy with the results - not too loud and stayed a bit deep.
Also put on the stage one filter and a retune - nice improvement in response, subtle not awe inspiring.
I would not hesitate to buy again - simply love it and miss it as I am in Texas till April riding my '13 anniv TG - weather has been great.

Weather is great now and I ride as often as I can, earlier in the year it seemed like it rained all the time. The buffeting I am experiencing is coming around the tank and under the windshield, not getting any over the top of the windshield. I hope that adding fork mounted wind deflectors will help. If someone doesn't make some for the FW soon I will fab some or modify some to fit. They helped a lot on a Roadking I had a few years ago.

I thought the FW already had a high flow air filter? Did you change the entire air filter housing or just the element? What did you do for a re-tune? Was this simply a "flash" at the dealer?

Enjoy your stay in Texas!

A/C tune exhaust etc done last spring. Used tuner on dealers dyno. used a/c housing and K/N filter.
housing allows much improved air flow. Happy with results.
We'll have to try and hook up sometime.

Almost 18,000 on my 'Free, but I bought it in September of 2014. Totally agree with the good stuff from both Sunman and DocnLou. I traded a Tri-Glide for my Free, I don't care for the fairings or windshields. I put Megaphone exhaust mufflers on because they are loud. Wife (she drives her own Tri-Glide) and I have ridden all over the South-West and I'm very happy with the ride and comfort. I'm sure Harley will come out with something bigger/better/faster in a couple of years, but until then I'll keep my Free.

Oh, I'm 70

Thanks for taking the time to post this review. I have had my FREE since July of 2015. I pretty much agree with all of your comments, and it is so aggravating trying to find any accessories. I am here in So Cal and have visited MANY H-D dealerships and they all say the same thing–"Well, the FREE is new, maybe in a year or so..." I always reply "WHAT? This little hot rod was in the planning stages long before that". I love Harley, but this does leave a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

I am 6' 7" and am trying to find a seat that will push me back 2-inches. I do ride 2-up with my wife once in a while. I had a "Le Pera Tall Boy" seat on my Road King and it was perfection. I may be wrong, but I can't fins anything out there. If anyone has heard of a solution to this, please share... I hate being tall... we'll, when it comes to riding that is.;)

Once again, thanks for the review. These are pricey bikes and I expect a lot out of the FREEWHEELER.

Some of the Harley touring seats will fit the FW. Most Harley dealers have seats that you can try out if you haven't done it already. As I said in my review, I have a Mustang seat. I know they make one for the FW that will move you closer to the handlebars but I don't know if they have a tallboy seat. You might check their website.

I have a somewhat similar issue. Only I am 6'1 with a bunch of padding.... the Tall boy seat didn't push me back far enough(part of my ass is on the lumber support)... mustang was a no go.... I am getting my Corbin seat tomorrow I will let you know what I find... I had them move me back and eliminate the back rest to move me back more....

fork wind deflectors should fix that. I made a set for my C-50 then moved them to the VTX trike. Had to cut new plastic for the X.

Here is the windshield I am running on the flrt freewheeler. I really like it and under 65 its completely still behind the windscreen. Even at 80 MPH its very comfortable for long day trips or touring. Rode from MT to OR in one day and was comfortable all day long. Wear a ff helmet and no buffeting.

Might have to look into one but for the money I could almost get a Memphis Shades fairing setup.

Fork mounted wind deflectors are next on the list. So far no one makes any for the FW that I have found. I may have to make my own.

Steve...thanks for your suggestion, will have a good look at that. Always enjoy your posts and especially your sense of humor. BTW, you aren't the only 70 yr old still enjoying a blast.

Sunman....we are in Donna in the RGV, about 340 miles south of you. maybe meet for lunch in Corpus/Rockport area? or wherever is convenient.

I know exactly where Donna is, my wife and I grew up in McAllen, just down the road from there. Maybe we can get together for lunch after the 1st of the year after the Holidays are over.

I hope so, that is what I am seeing on the forum. I have sent him 3 e-mails on his site's "contact us" app but have never received a reply.

It came in, I was able to get a short ride in after the install. It is stiff but I like that, exceptionally comfortable. I feel I am much higher on this seat. With the Tall Boy seat I could easily flat foot, the Corbin seat I am more on my toes. The good thing is that my legs are more stretched out and the foot controls are easier to work(don't feel like my knees are in my chest) ... VERY thankful I have ordered 16in apes already as I need higher bars now. I have a longer test ride scheduled for tomorrow. Oh and some quick pics I took....I had the stitching done in blue to match the free and I laid out the tape for some reference on size. 10624690_1051129908251980_3177687228034510600_n.jpg8626_1051147834916854_3297015140404690392_n.jpg946447_1051148304916807_7295145426435555266_n.jpg10624690_1051129908251980_3177687228034510600_n.jpg

That seat looks great,James. Give it about 500 miles to break in. Our Corbin was pretty stiff at first but is very comfortable, now. It is also taller,as you mention.

Almost at 1,000 now, with the seat plus the bars, I feel I can ride pretty much all day, still need some pegs to stretch my legs but everything else is awesome comfortable.

I do not have a Freewheeler.....but quite a bit of seat time on 6 different HDs and others as well. I would strongly suggest the Klock Werks windshields on ANY bike. For the Free it will be wider and has the "hips" on the sides that take the bike from a Lift wind effect to a down effect that really plants the bike. Much less wind buffeting. And again - Just my opinion

Thank you for all the feedback to this thread. I will take delivery of my 2015 Freewheeler on Saturday. This is very encouraging news. I am coming off a 2007 Sportster with 60k miles.

CONGRATS SUSAN!

You are going to love this thing! Quite a bit different than riding a Sportster, but just be patient during the learning curve. KEEP YOUR FEET OFF THE GROUND.

Had mine about a year as well

I love the style of the bike, but if the lowers I just pre-ordered from JESCUSTOMACCENTS doesn't fix the wind buffeting it is gone. This is the worst bike I have owned as far as buffeting goes. Over all the style is all I really like, performance is lacking and I can't pass a gas station. I think its time with me is limited. I only have 6000 on it but we will see.
