FLU

They would not be able to sell flu shots if the failure rate is as bad as Rod69 describes. This year I also got the pneumonia vaccination, recommended at age 65. Both shots just gave me a sore arm, no illness. The success rate is better than stated by Rod69.

I've never gotten flu shots, my mom brought us up not believing in them, you know moms are never wrong.... but I've seen the light. I will be getting one from now on.

Bazooka,
Sorry to hear your sick. I was in the Military almost 43 years, I have taken every shot known to man, and the flu shot was given every year, I was sick at least twice a year my whole time in the service, I retired 15 years ago and have not taken a flu shot or any other shot since I retired and have not been sick one day with the exception of a hangover or two,
my wife has never had a flu shot in her life and has never had the flu.
You must have been around someone that had a bad case of the flu, hope you get over it soon.
You don't need no stinking flu shot, JMO.

I have never had a flu shot in my life. I cant remember the last time I got the flu. Many years ago I reckon. Now,,,Food poisoning...That's a different story,,,Eat anything weird lately Z-Man??

Maybe I was over the top just a little bit. But Honestly I do get the flu about every other year. I keep saying I not going to take one, but I usually end up doing it. The nurse that gave us the shot this year said the shot covered 3 out of the 4 strains of flu this year. Year before last year I got the flu so bad I was in the Hospital and did lose 30 lbs. I thought I had rode for the last time. I probably will get strain #4 that the shot didn't cover this time. Well Zook hope you get well soon.

That sounds like Rod69's track record so I'm wondering if some people react to the vaccine differently that others. From what little I know about flu shots you're actually getting a mild dose of the flu to kick in your body's immune system to fight it off right?

Food wise, no nothing out of the ordinary...cutting back on the carbs is about it. I've had food poisoning a few times and this ain't that. That's another kind of hell.

Rod, I think I'd seriously consider staying away from flu shots for a while and see how that goes if I were you. Doesn't sound like you'd be a whole lot worse off.

I got my prescription filled tonight for the cough medicine the Doc wrote for me last night. The gal at Walgreens smiled and said something like..."Oh you'll like this..." when she rang me up. Now I understand what she was talking about.
It's called Hydromet :xzqxz: :D :xzqxz: :p

This mess has hung on for way too long, its wearing me out. The coughing is still there and I still feel like poop. I've also developed some sort of a sharp pain in my lower left side abdomen that comes and goes and makes me wanna say bad things when I cough.
:gah:

All Jacked-Up on the Mountain Dew were ya? ;)

Just the opposite....this stuff chills you out. It does help with the coughing and gives you the warm and fuzzies, but its all gone so now so its back to Alka Seltzer Plus, my go to cure for most anything.

Takes two to three weeks to get out of the woods, depending on severity. Probably pulled a muscle from the coughing. I had patients break ribs from all the coughing. Call or go back to your Doc for a refill, on the good stuff. Less coughing, less pain!

Delsym is a good over the counter cough medicine. Seems to work better than Robitussin DM for most.

Seems like it takes forever with that dam flu. Probably did hurt your ribs. Bet you have lost quite a bit of weight too. Hope you get to feeling better soon.
Something that happened to me in the spring, I sneezed while driving the wife to the doctor and tore the rib cartilage on the left side and about wrecked the car. Then I got a bad cold and everytime I coughed or sneezed I would have to hold my side, hurt like hell. Still have to do this, kind of hard going down the road on the trike and hold you side while sneezing. Anyway get well soon!

Yeah I've lost 15 lbs, was already cutting back on carbs but this stuff kills your appetite.

Son#1 calls Sunday morning at 6 am.
(I know the call is not going to be a good thing, I normally sleep til 11ish)
He is in the ER in the college town he lives in.
No fever, but he has the trots, and cant quit barfing
along with a terrible cough.
A couple of hours later, with a couple of units of saline
in his system and a prescription for drugs he is headed
for walmart.
Four days later, he is just getting over it.
He said it hit him harder than most of the other students.

It gonna be a long winter at this rate.

Hey Man, Sorry you have been down and out! I hope you are feeling better today! Even more so since I have selfish interest beyond wishing you to feel better! :D I need a rake kit as soon as possible. Please let me know if you will be up to taking an order anytime soon. PM is fine. If not, I really hope you feel better soon. I know the Flu hurts! Been there, done that, getting my shot next week!
Thanks

so, in conclusion, flu shot or not?

already had mine from the v.a. have given a few at work.

its not the same as when they gave the army recrutes the swine flu shots, that was a live virus and I for one thought it was going to kill me!

this is a dead virus in the shots. your immune system builds up against a dead virus. The nasal mist form is a live virus (no thanks) . CDC has to guess early in the year what strains of flu will be the worst and build a vaccine to cover as broad a range as they can. So it is quite possible to be exposed to a strain that was not covered.

25% ? I think its closer to 60% still better odds than the lotto. I take my shot every year and hope for the best. Working in a jail who knows what I can get exposed to. I wear my gloves when needed and don"t get any closer than I have to. one little shot beats what you just went thru.

Sorry to hear about your son's aliment, sounds like maybe a stomach virus...not fun. There are all sorts of stains of what is generally called the "FLU", mine is an upper respiratory variety and its been real sloooooow to go away.

Thanks Gilroy, starting to feel I tad more human. Shoot me a PM and I will hook you up.

I've pretty much convinced myself to forgo the flu shots.

Still not sure about the flu shot. If I knew for sure it doesn't cause the flu, I'd get one every year.

Sorry to hear that. Being in medicine for 40+ years, I personally know the good the flu, pneumonia and shingles shots do!!!

Still not sure about the flu shot. If I knew for sure it doesn't cause the flu, I'd get one every year.

You cannot get the FLU from the FLU shot, it is a dead virus! Scientifically, proven! No way to get the FLU. A sore arm for a day, possibly.
