One of my riding buddies (Alabama) that was on our last ride up to the mountains contacted me a couple of days ago. He has a 2017 TG and thought his handlebars had a little too much play in them. He ordered the bushing and when he got it he removed the fairing to install. What he discovered was that the weld on the right side of his aftermarket apes had partially failed. According to him it is cracked about half way around. A couple of years ago we both had our handlebars changed out at a motorcycle shop close to his house in Alabama.

Neither one of use could find our receipt and neither one of us can recall exactly what brand they were. He is going to contact the shop Tuesday.

We did some really hard riding on a bunch of twisties, including the Dragon, so he is lucky it didn't fail completely. Anyone ever hear of welds failing on a set of handlebars?

Thats scary, do you know what brand his bars were?
I just got a short text from him yesterday and he said they found the receipt and the bars were purchased/installed in 2019. I asked what brand but he hasn't answered yet. I'm guessing the shop told him the manufacturer wouldn't replace them. I'll update when I get more info from him.

That can be really scary. In 2006 I was riding my 05 Road King, with Mary on back.

About 20 miles from home I felt something get loosie goosey in the handlebars.

I very cautiously, slowly and carefully made my way home, not saying anything to Mary.

It was not a failed weld.

Took a look after getting home, the bars were cracked 80% around...barely anything still holding them together, other than the top clamps. (they broke between the two top clamps)

Since that time I have never run anything but a single piece top clamp.

Good to hear he made it home incident free.

Wow, that is pretty scary to think about it happening to you

His receipt shows they were R&R 12" Polished Mayhem Bagger Bars (Stainless). He had a neighbor who apparently was a professional welder so the bars are repaired and back on.

Kevin, sounds like you dodged a catastrophic event about like he did.

It is hard to know when that weld failed. He thinks it might have failed prior to his trip.
