This is to Kevin of DK customs
Kevin. You stated that you would never have a twin cam without an extended warranty. My question to you is From reading all the posts about your bike you have put on 1. different exhaust 2. a power vision tuner 3. a dk air cleaner with external breathers 4. a remote oil filter and a numerous amount of other stuff. How has this affected your warranty? Do you remove all this when your bike breaks down or do you have a special relationship with your dealer? And if you have that relationship what would happen with your warranty if you were on the road far from home?
The reason I ask is I have bought a few of your products and am very impressed with not only your products but also with your fast shipping and your telephone service when I have problems reading install instructions.
I would like to add more things like your tuner, your shocks, and your remote oil filter but I am very worried about warranty as I live in Canada and travel mostly in the good old USA where they give their food and gas away compared to Canada and am worried about breaking down
Thanks for your business, and kind words about DK, we appreciate it!
There is the law regarding warranties, and then there is reality.
The reality is that dealerships get paid less from HD Corporate and the ESP insurance company to do work than if they do the same work when a Customer is paying.
The reality is that some dealerships will blame non HD branded parts for a failure of HD parts and say that the repair is not covered under warranty.
The reality is that you can fight it and win, because the law is on your side.
HOWEVER, it is probably not worth it. (you may "win" and force them to do the warranty work, but the time, effort, and possible legal fees make it not worth it).
I have had a LOT of warranty work done on various bikes and trikes over the years.
If it is an electrical item (reverse motor, switches, etc.) there is nothing modded on my bike that could possibly be related to the failure, so I do nothing before taking it in.
If it is a Power Train item (engine, primary, transmission), then I will remove the Power Vision, and put it back to stock tune. I will remove the air cleaner and put the stock one back on, I would remove the remote oil filter.
I do NOT change out the exhaust or oil cooler. I have Never heard of any dealership voiding a warranty for a change in headers or an addition of a Jagg oil cooler.
Power Vision and returning to stock tune takes all of 10 minutes. Air Cleaner takes 30 minutes or so. Remote oil filter takes 1.5 hours or so.
Yeah, it is a bit of a hassle, but if you are talking about a $1000 or more repair due to an engine failure, it is worth it.
Out of my over 200,000 miles of traveling away from home on Twin Cams, I have only had one warranty repair done on the road. It was in South Dakota for the Panhard rod on my '11 Tri-Glide.
I changed nothing on the Trike and had zero issues with the warranty covering the repair.
However, I have thought about warranty repair if I was to need something major done on the road.
If it was major enough that I needed engine, primary or transmission repair while on the trip, then the trip (or at a part of it) would be pretty much toast anyway.
I would get a take-off stock air cleaner from a dealership, or ebay and install it, the other two items need nothing, just remove them, so at the most it would add one day to the delay.
If you are not comfortable changing air cleaners or oil filter relo's yourself, find a local indy shop to do it for you before going to the dealership.
For the weaknesses that the Twin Cams have, that need warranty repair, most of the time they are not of the nature that leave you stuck on the side of the road.
