Extended Warranty?

Matter of fact Trent i've bought 4 h-d's in the last 13yrs.As far as the 1/10 of 1%,i'm in that category in two ways,i can do the work, plus i have never had a problem with any of them after the 2yr. warranty period! I have a good dealer,as far as what i read on here.I have times when i turn red & use some very colorful wording, but they always fix the problem.Maybe if you have a good dealer that honored the origanal warranty, then maybe buy an extended for piece of mind.Just my opinion that if things don't get fixed in the first 2 yrs, good odds they won't get fixed in the next warranty period.I will stick by my inferior product remark, anybody on here plunk out 30+ for your family vehicle & have it back at the dealer or broke down on the road as much as H-D's do,none of us would be able to get to work.I didn't mean to offend anyone on here, that wasn't my intent.

HD wouldn't give me the extended warranty since the motor is hopped up. But it's all SE parts? What gives? The trike has been in the shop more than I've had it. My warranty will be up in May. After that I don't know what I'll do with it.

arnie, 4 bikes in 13 years? that means you keep a Harley, on average 3 years. No wonder you don't need an extended warranty. LOL
I wish I had your knowledge on repairing bikes/cars. I can do minor things like oil changes and brake pads, but that's about it. I keep my bikes on average 7 years, my last one 9 years. So far the 03 Ultra was the one that gave me the most problems. I called it "The Prince of Darkness". The extended warranty sure paid off on that one.
Other then a minor problem here and there that my dealer took care of, all my bikes have given me trouble free years.
Now that I'm close to not having a job, the extended warranty and service contract is a life saver and piece of mind, at least for 7 years.

Ride safe my friend.

Garyd(got it right this time)I bought a new 2000 l/rider in 99 & had it til 2010.bought a new r/k in 04,which in my opinion is one of the best bikes i ever had,& still have.My l/rider had 38,000 trouble free miles, but a ton of upgrades.i traded it for a 2011 street glide that had 750miles on it when traded for my 2011 triglide. My trike has almost 20,000 miles on it.Some lil issues with it,other then heat & the dealer has taken care of them.My first two h-d's were great, didn't have the streetglide long enough to know about the heat issues on the newer h-d's til i got the trike.Hopefuly it will last long enough for h-d to come out with a water cooled design.I wasn't a member on here when i bought the streetglide& i didn't know about the heat problem.i've learned a heck of alot from people on here & i'm glad to be here, just wish i would of known about this site earlier. Thanks gary & you too.

arnie, same here. My 03 Ultra didn't have a big heat problem, but there was some heat. I traded that for a 2010 Limited. Had it for 18 months till I traded that for the 2012 TG. I discovered this forum right after buying the TG. Since buying my TG in the fall, I wasn't aware of any major heat problems until reading them here. I paniced and did the Harley SE pipe/AC/tuner mods in December to head off any problems come summer. I also added a custom made "Crotch Cooler" and floor board extenders. I did not have a heat problem all this past summer - even in stop and go traffic in Washington DC during Rolling Thunder. So I'm happy with the results. No more heat problems, and I still have the lowers on. ThumbUp

Bottom line is I don't know if I really needed to do the pipe/AC/tune or not, but will assume I did according to all the posts here.
If I was to do all over again, I would try the crotch cooler and floor boards first - then the AC/pipes and last the tune.

I just got a flyer in the mail about the HD Extendo Warranty for $1850/5 extra years. Any one have experience or opinion? I never get these but am seriously considering this one....

Thanks

I just got my TG back from the shop Wednesday. Replaced the rear jug, head and piston. Total bill $1992.00, I'm glad I have the extended warranty:)

Wow talk about luck, at least they didn't try to take short cuts and piece meal the repair.

I have had my 1997 wing since 1999 . Put on 67,000 miles only thing done to it was a speedometer cable and drive, ($124.00 ) and new alternator brushes ($50.00). I put $1,000 in a seperate bank account and do not touch it for 5 years. If I have a problem I draw money from it. If not I still have the $ 1,050 .in this case I only had $875.
BTW. in the state of Conn you need insurance on you car, bike trike ect or they will pull your registration .

I saw the comment on the steering nut if by that you mean a neck adjustment then just to let all you folks know I have had that on my 09 ultra and my 12 tri-glide . I did some research at other shops - Honda Yamaha kawi and at all of those shops I was told and shown the war. plans which with all of them a neck adjustment is not covered by reg. warranty or extended. But at least on the tri-glide my dealer did not charge me anything to do it.As for the cost of extended I am almost breaking even with both bikes so was worth it as most of the problems I have had have all been small but they do add up.

That's the beauty of the extended warranty - you DON"T have to buy it.
If you are a great mechanic, then you definitly don't need it, but if you're all thumbs and don't know a phillips screwdriver from a blade screwdriver and have heard horror stories about Harleys breaking down, then an extended warranty is just the ticket.

John, that's what a lot of people say and it makes some sense, but what if you had a major engine problem(odds are against it)and had to replace it or in the 5 years you had 4 or 5 minor problems. That $1000 wouldn't come close to helping.
Harleys are a bunch of mechanical and electrical parts and anything mechanical or electrical can break down. Some never have a problem and some have lots of problems. I had one Ultra that gave me nothing but problems, 2 gave me a few problems and 4 that had none.

For me the piece of mind is well worth the cost - especially concidering my job situation and the economy. ThumbUp

Just had my stator and that engine clutch device (drawing blank on name) replaced on extended warranty 3000 miles from home (as a drunken crow flies). This would have cost $1000. My extended warranty has now paid for itself with previous things also. And still 4 1/2 years left on it.

Compensator?

Exactly. With a good night's rest, my brain is working on a 3 cylinders again ( of course, it is an 8 cyl brain).

Its a common failure item, my dads was toast by 36,000 miles and the one in the 2010 I had was giving up the ghost at 22,000 miles when I got rid of the trike. I'll bet there are more folks running around with a bad compensator who don't even know its bad, they probably figure the clunk when they shut it down is normal.

a friend of mine has an 2011 triglide like mine. His clunks & mine don't.His was built 2 months before mine. When did they go to the s/e comps? We both have aprox. same mileage.

Does both bikes have the same oils ? Could make a big difference !! How many miles ? :Trike1:

The Triglide has come equipped with the SE compenstor since day one.

Health ins, not required. Travel ins., not required. Full coverage comp and coll, not required by law (maybe by lender) but not by law. you dont even have to have liability insurance if you can prove financial responsibility. GOOD DAY SIR. I SAID GOOD DAY!

You better check with Obomber on that health Ins.

True to a point,,,,, If you aren't going to purchase liability, you must post a bond in place of the insurance. The bond has to be somewhere around $100,000.00. Not that much cash, but you will tie up that much in guarantee money, and if you are proved at fault, pay up to that amount, plus attorney fees. Insurance is much cheaper..
The company I worked for Union Pacific Railroad, is self insuring. Only cheaper because of the thousands of vehicles, & millions of other liabilities. I guess bottom line if you have enough money to buy the company,,,, why buy extended warranty.......
Idaho has insurance for uninsured, & under-insured insurance that you have to fill out forms & sign if you don't want to buy. Just like extended warranty.

I myself purchased the extended warrenty for several of the reasons mentioned, one other side note...I was told by the finance mgr when i purchased my Tg that if for some reason you did not have to file a claim on the warrenty it is 100% refundable, any of you guys heard this from your dealer, may be a good research factor if you are planning on purchasing...

That would be a great selling point. Think about it, MoCo gets to keep your money for the duration, and if they give your money back at the end because of no claims, they have just enjoyed a FREE loan.
But the few they would actually have to pay back would be dang few ! You wouldn't even be able to take your bike back to the dealer anywhere. There would be a reward out for the bike to be done under warranty. Might be nothing but to adjust your drive belt for you when you had it serviced. Or replaced a light bulb for ya. Nothing to it thanks we did it for free for ya..... :Trike1:

Re: Ext warranty, Brakes

Do you have more info on the updated parts, service bulletin, numbers, etc ? I have a 2012 with grooved rotors being replaced under warranty.

I have had many problems with the rear brake on my 2009 triglide some with HD design and also with mechanic from HD not knowing how to work on them.I do most of my own work unless it's covered by extended warranty.
I sent rotors out to Lendal Racing in Cali they crossed drilled them for me seems to kept rotors cool, also use their gold pads. I think they have a new rotor of their own design will be checking them out next.

hope this was helpful

As far as getting your money back on the extended warranty when you trade in, it's true...to a point. I traded in my Limited that had two years left on the warranty and figured that I should get about $900 back on the "unused" portion. WRONG!!! I got half that back and couldn't get an answer as to what happened to the rest. Figured at least I got something, so didn't complain too much. Maybe it had to do with them replacing three regulators on the bike in the first year when they had a batch of bad ones.

I would think if that happened in the first year, your new vehicle warranty should have covered it not the extended warranty.

I think I had one year on the new vehicle warranty and one year extended left when I traded it in. I honestly don't remember what I paid for that one year, but had a "feeling" I was going to go to a trike so didn't get the 3 year version. Yes, the regulators were all covered on the original warranty, and I had 11 months left on the extended. Figured they must prorate it in their favor...one day over, only 6 months back...or something like that.

Call HD and ask for a factory rep, they should be able to take care of your problems with bike and dealer.I did the 1k service ,they never changed primary or trans the plugs still had factory sealant on them. Since then I change my own fluids every 2500-3000 miles.I use there products and keep records and receipts (put mileage on them). As long as I do that they honored the 2 year warrantee and now into extended.Already got back what I spent on extended but really hate the $50 copay!!! Hope this helps.. ride safe

Are you sure the dealer didn't also use the same sealant, I know the dealer I used to do business with did, I do as well.
