Emergency Brake Use

I use it with the bike in first gear. When the parking brake is on, I always put down the passenger floorboard down that is over the parking brake as a reminder to release the brake.

I've done that, but then the brakes drag, "you don't need no stinken parking brake," just leave it in 1st gear ;).

Can't answer for your parking brake, but if pull mine up tight, the machine does not move in first gear with the power on, clutch released. However, I agree with you that one does not need a parking brake, I don't need mine, don't use it, but my GW/Road Smith parking brake came with the package, there was no option not to have it, therefore I have it.

I use mine and found out as mentioned it is necessary to pop it off or it does not release. I see no reason avoid using it. Cars have been coming with them for how many years?

Cars may come with parking brakes but most folks don't use them either. Just put in into park.

That is the reason parking brakes in cars should be used all the time or never. Many car drivers have used their parking brake for the first time in 3 years and found out they could not release it. Which reminds me, I need to exercise my car parking brake today.

I do use the parking brake on my Trike all the time and have not had an issue with it to date.

And you drive a what? Not that it matters, but some, including myself are interested in what others ride. Would be nice to see it in the post. Maybe I'm out in left field with that, jus sayin. Sometimes you can see it in the Avatar, sometimes not.

I used to use mine, but I found that it needed adjustment after a while to hold. So I pulled out the service manual, did the adjustment and it was perfect... for about two days. After that it was back to drifting down my very slightly sloped driveway, with or without the engine running. 15K miles, and still have plenty of brake pad left, so not sure what the issue is here. I just don't feel justified in spending 10 minutes adjusting it, only to have to do it over in a few days.

Just my .02

BTW, did I mention that I live in Florida?

How many people use their emergency brake? Pro's or con's to removing the brake lever and all hardware. Would give more ground clearance under the axles and allow me to extend the left footboard out. Tony

Remove it. Put a piece of Velcro around you handlebar. If you ever find yourself in REAL need for an emergency (parking brake) brake, wrap the Velcro around your front brake lever. My VTX has no parking brake. I drive it 2 to 3 times a week all year. I've not once found the need for a parking brake. Don't know what your driving but I personal find the barking brake on the Freewheeler to be the ugliest addition to a motorcycle I have ever seen.

I have read where some do remove the parking brake, put it on the shelf. I'm not going to all that trouble, just don't use it. God forbid I have to sell or trade the thing someday, put it all back together, why do that?

Lots of us have removed that worthless piece of crap from our TG's. It rattles and squeaks, wears out your brakes faster, and is a pain to try and keep adjusted. The best way to adjust it is remove it, as you do not need it. Just park it in 1st gear. It is not going anywhere. And If I ever sell my TG, I will do the buyer a solid and hand it to him in a box. He can put it back on if he wants. ;)

I use the parking brake religiously , had to adjust it one time in the 14,000 that is on the 2014. If it is dragging it is not adjusted properly or it isn't released properly. No problems here , if on a serious incline , which I try to avoid parking on , I will put it in gear also . My $.02 , Ebert

:Agree: I had issues with the brake on my '12 TG, but not the one on my '14 TG. Works perfectly for the last year and a half (when I needed it).

I will NEVER park my bike in gear - period. No worries about forgetting and staring it in gear-which I have done once or twice in my 55 years of riding.
If I need extra holding power, I have a Velcro band like cavie mentioned. That also works perfectly and is impossible to forget to remove.
