Due for a front Tire

Hey Everyone

Hope that you are getting a bunch if miles in this spring.

Before the summer is out I am going to have to get a front tire for my 2014 Tri-glide.

First tires I have bought for the Tri-Glide.

What has and has not worked for everyone?

Just want to get something that I will not have to replace every 10,000 or 15,000 miles.

don't mind so spend a little extra cash to get some more miles.

THANKS!

I replaced my front tire [11 T/G] at about 14 thousand with the same stock tire... So far i have about 22 thousand on the second tire, But its getting real close to replacing...Like soon. And i'll use another stock tire. The rear look like the'll last for 50 thousand..

Just to add i ran a much lower air pressure on the first tire...

The second one it keep it at 36psi

I also will need a new front tire.....on the red/green line:AGGHH:....tad short of 14K miles! Have new Dunlop sitting in the parts dept shelf at my local HD dealer....with all my "discounts" the cost to me was $75!

I just installed an Avon trike tire on the front of mine. Only have around 1000 miles so far, & no signs of wear so far. Hope it stays that way !
Handles real well on all roads. Running 36# air.

Front Tire

I went with a Michelin Commander II rear tire and mounted it backwards. Many miles, still looks new. I've done this before and you can be sure to get LOTS of miles.

put a new Dunlop on yesterday. the ride improved a lot. the old kenda tire was done. I immediately noticed a decrease in head shake at low speed. the old tire had been on before we triked the ultra and after I noticed some cupping . being cheap I left it on and road it into the ground. I have read all about the rear tire backwards thing and I don't see how a wider tire would fit under my front fender. there is not a lot of free room on the sides. oh well ,I should be good for at least 12,000 miles :)

Trike front tire

I was thinking about front tires the other day when I was at a bike repair shop.
I happened to see a dirt bike sitting there with an almost flat front tire, tread wise.

That brought up the thought of why we would need a rounded motorcycle front tire like the two wheelers. It's not like we'll be leaning into a curve or turn. So I wondered why our front tires weren't mostly flat across the tread.

It might require a little more torque to the handlebar to turn, but think about the increased grip & possible tire life with a 3-3.5" flat tread on the front.
Plus the probability of an enhanced ride due to greater tread contact.

Okay guys & ladies, am I all wet on my thinking on this?
Please send some comments.

Thanks all in advance.

Front Tire

Yup NHBagger has the right idea rear tire on front works well as I have read lots of post on this. I will try that when I am do for one ,now i run dunlap elite 2 on front I like the white block lettering and if in a group it makes the trike stand out more:pepper:

You need to take another look at the angle of the front wheel when it is turned. It doesn't stand straight up & down. There is a rake in the front forks that allow the wheel to lean from side to side.
If the rake wasn't there ( forks straight up & down) you could then turn the wheel without a leaning effect. Also with the flat tire tread I don't think there would be much tire left on the pavement when turned.
Also trying to keep it going down a highway with a crown to the pavement, you couldn't keep it in a straight line without a fight.

What's the rationale behind running a rear tire on the front backwards? Especially the backwards part?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Being the front wheel needs to be a rolling grip, by runing it in reverse eliminates the need for tread grip on excelerating hence a smoother ride and no cupping. Michelin scooter tires are all reversable with tire rotation arrows. How did i do in splaining Lucy!!

I think it has more to do with the way the tires are construed [Bonded layers] ' If you use them in the front and don't reverse them they can come apart internally...

Thanks for the link to the article Zammy. My local shop explained it basically the same way but didn't say anything about how the splice was put together. I leaned something!!!

That's right. I think it was AVON tire company that issued an engineering memo about running a rear tire on the front and the need for it to be reverse rotation to what it would be mounted on the rear. You can probably google it? Ride Safe! I run a rear Dunlap E3 the same size as a normal front tire on the front of my Trike reverse rotation, 30K miles. Give one a try??

My 2014 Tri Glide just reached 20k miles this past weekend. Low and behold I noticed a new front tire is needed very soon. Was curious as to the average mileage others were experiencing before replacing. Based on the responses I see here it looks like I did ok.

First Stock tire 14k I'm on my second tire [stock also] 22k and its gonna have to be replaced soon..

Just over 19k on my 12my. Just changed original front tire last week. Went with a Michelin commander II front tire this time. Front could have went a few thousand more, but planning a trip to Michigan next month and will just feel better with fresh tread up front.

rhino 2,

Big difference in mileage between 2 stock tires. In ideas why?

Jerry

Two posable reasons...

1] Road a little more aggressive when i first got the Tri...

2] Used a lower pressure in the first tire for a softer ride...,

Instead of the 36 psi that i'm now using

Quick update on the Avon trike tire. Just returned from a three day trip to the Dragon and surrounding curvy roads. I put almost a 1000 miles on the tire and was very pleased with the performance. Never had any "wash out" or jump in any of the curves; trike handled very well.

I have a 2012. Did you have any fender clearence problems. I noted groves in comander 2 ftront are 4mm,rear is 8 mm. How does it handle hydro planing? Thanks Ray

I put the new Avon Trike specific tire on my front. Got about 1200 miles on it and it handles really well. So far, it looks like it will wear really well too, I can't see any signs of wear yet

I got 23K out of the OEM Dunlop at 36 psi, so I went with another. This one lasted only about 15K ( I have pushed it a lot harder!). I also went with the Avon Cobra trike tire for the new one. 2000 or so miles, and very pleased. Seems to handle much better, we will see how it wears, but I got it installed at the same price as the Dunlop, so I plan on using the same thing again.
