Drivetrain noise

2012 TG with 1800 miles on it. Have this gear like noise coming from somewhere in the drivetrain. Can't isolate it to primary, transmission, or differential. Sounds like an old sewing machine all the time. Gets worse when bike is at full running temperature. Put Redline shockproof heavy in tranny and it did nothing to quiet it. Also clangs loudly when shifting into 3,4,or 5, up or down. Also lots of racket in neutral with clutch out. Dealer did 1000 mile service and says all in normal and ok. Never had a Harley that made this racket before.

Any suggestions????

when you pull in the clutch, does the noise go away within 20 sec.? try another dealer. i have a '09 t/g & on this site have heard that the 11, & 12 have a-lot more problems. drop by a local like (non-dealer ) bike shop. i'm sure they will give you some spot-on guidenance.

i'd thought the red line would help, as i use it too. not much help, but good luck.

the clank when shifting is normal, just to see. reach under the bike on left side & see if you can get (lets say a .o25 feeler gage between the drive belt & the trans case.if it rubs, point this out & the dealer can adjust it. i can't find anything in the service manual. lb check this site & others in the trouble shooting area. try v-twin forume, & hdtalking forume too.

Normal sounds magnified by fairing, fenders, lowers, and body. Do yourself a favor and get these Howard Leight | Quiet Earplugs. You will enjoy your ride much more. And the noise with the clutch lever out and in neutral when hot, thats called neutral rattle.ThumbUp

does it sound like a whining and increases with speed??

Also you may need a clutch adjustment for the shifting..

should not make noise in neutral either ..

wondering about your primary chain adjuster??

Here ya go.....HD put out service bulletin M1304 for all 07 and later twin cams which states:

"When a motorcycle is at operating temperature and in neutral, a rattling sound may be heard on the right side coming from the area of the transmission side cover. This sound is normal and is referred to as neutral rattle. To verify the sound is neutral rattle, pull in the clutch lever and hold it for 10 to 15 seconds. If the sound stops, it is neutral rattle. Neutral rattle is caused by the necessary backlash within the first gear pair."

My new trike is the worst neutral rattler I've ever owned, and yes I get the answer you reference above.

Thing is, when they tell me this and I nod and say oh yeah, then why do some do it and others don't they get this look on their face that reminds me of Wile E. Coyote just before the Roadrunner's anvil hit him in the head.

It's a machine. Not everyone is going to operate or sound exactly the same.

My TG started rattling right after the 5k service. Last night I heard a sound from under the bike that I've NEVER heard before and when I stopped I smelled burning oil. When I got home I checked the oil and it looked fine. I rode into Chicago last night - escorted all the way by state cops. What a rush. Hated coming home in city traffic and having to obey the traffic lights.

Bike seems fine this morning.

I agree with rap47.

I use E.A.R. yellow plugs - fantastic for cutting noise, but still able to hear music clearly - engine sounds fantastic because I don't hear the clicking and clacking - just the hum of a beautiful engine. :D

That certainly sounds like a poor excuse not to fix something thats not right. They probably think if they tell everyone it's normal, that fixes the problem, and everyone will go away.

Trikermutha, it does sound like a whining noise and does increase with speed. Any ideas????

yea its in the primary..chain tension and the auto shoe adjuster in my opinion could be some gear noise..??. once the chain stretches more it will quite down some..I really dont think its anything to worry about.

I noticed it once on my older Harley when I replaced my primary chain it sounded just like it does on the new trike..

Hope that helps some..

That's akin to turning up the radio to cure the sound of pinging. You'll enjoy the ride a lot more.....at least until it shuts down by the side of the road!
