Had a deer run out in front of me in July last year, saw it in time to slow down before impact, luckily it was a Bambi. Wife and I had no injuries. Dealership made me a great offer to upgrade from a 2015 to a 2017.

Had another deer deer try to take me out Sunday, saw it at time of impact, large buck this time. Thankfully I was riding solo, sprained ankle was the only injury I had. Dealership made a 10 hr trip to pick up my trike, still waiting on insurance to settle up.

I’m beginning to think the deer don’t like me. Glad I was on a trike though, injuries would have been worse on a bike.

10hrs ? Ya don’t have a dealer closer ? That tow bill alone might cause a total .

Remember if ya see one deer crossing, the rest of the heard/family is not far behind. Hope the repairs are good, or do the old tradein trick. Glad your ok. :clapping:

OUCH! 2 deer in a year, have you purchased or ate any venison in the past? I personally think, their out to get you! BIG TIME!

Woods Rats ! I live in deer 🦌 county I can't even tell you how many close calls I've had 😱And I can't tell you how many times I slowed down for crossing deer and flashed my lights to oncoming drivers to warn them only for them to have the deer ln ln the deer in the headlights look and never slow down 😱📞

Come one down to Carolina. We're over run with those critters. Glad you're ok. Ride safe, Rev. J.

Couple of summers ago my wife and I hit a deer with our trike up near Eagle River, WI. Good thing it was on a trike we have always said, neither of us sustained any injuries except for the trike. That was $5000 to repair.

Wow!

Glad you've come out of both of them ok.

Hope you get a good settlement and the replacement Trike you want!

DK's next accessory

There you go Kevin. DK Custom's next trike accessory, a frame mounted front end guard like the bumper guards you see on all the trucks in deer country. I've got a set of the deer whistles on mine to let them know I'm coming so they know right when to jump out in front of me.

How about a giant airbag that goes in front of the trike. Just hope a pothole wouldn't set it off. I could look like someone blowing bubblegum.

Gee Robert - ya got 2 without pulling a trigger! Lucky you. Glad you got off better than the trike and the deer. Hope all turns out well on the insurance deal.

Deer Point and Shoot

I was up in the NC mountains riding with a couple of sheriff's deputies many years ago from a Florida county where their cruisers are hitting deer all of the time. The officers explained to me that deer do not look right or left when they decide to run across a road. They simply look at where they want to go and do a "point and shoot" maneuver without regard for traffic.

As someone pointed out, if you see one run across the road, you will likely have others that follow without regard to traffic patterns. BTW, I put myself between the two deputies and we strafed the mountains. I was hoping that their badges would get us off if we happened to pass some gendarmes at a higher than normal rate of speed :p Luckily, my defensive tactics were not challenged by another with a badge.

I had a friend who was a local cop get a ticket in another State on a bike and the cop didn't cut him a bit of slack. My buddy suggested that he hoped to see the fellow LEO in our town one day for some courteous payback :wave4:

Looks like I’ll be waiting on my trike being repaired. Insurance company said $9K in repairs, maybe more once they open the fairing. Won’t be enough to total.

The dealership offered me $15K less than I payed for the trike 6 months ago, no additional money for extras that have been added. Not going to take that big of a hit just to go from a 2017 to a 2018. They’ve got a new sales manager since my last incident.

Worst part is I’m working 10 hours from home, having to do everything over phone and emails.

If ya get to keep the 9k then it’s only a 6k loss

9K in damage isn't too bad. When I hit a deer with my 11 month old Road Glide last year, the initial estimate was $18000.00, and it totaled. Still was pretty costly to move up to a new Tri-Glide, but the way the deer are in northern MN, it was well worth it!

Airbags on Harleys coming soon?

Following Honda Goldwings set up I bet

A friend in MN hit a Deer on the North shore near Duluth, only saving grace was the Goldwing air bag

That said the deer here in FLA are pretty small compared to deer in Mn

I still dont want to hit one

I live in deer county , And I've seen a lot fo deer hit by inattentive drivers....Not saying thats the case with the deer hits on this Tread....But i see it all the time...And i'm thinking that those are the same type of drivers that turn left in front of bikes...

I had an accident on the Pig Trail in Arkansas back in 2003 on my Ultra. I only got a sore shoulder. Bike cost $13K to fix - they didn't total it. What I did was have everything damaged upgraded so all I paid was the difference between the stock part and the upgrade. That bike had every option available - chrome everywhere. :)

Will never do that again = got nothing for all that at trade in.

Keeping fingers crossed - never had a close call with a deer - a few times with a jack ass behind the wheel though.

Thought about getting one of those deer whistles, but every report (incl. Consumer Reports) that I've read, say they don't work.

Yeah, but I don't think they attract the deer. I've run them on every bike I've had for the last 15+ years.

Kevin

And I've never had one in 50+ years - never had even a near miss.

Of course, I don't live where deer live, but I do a lot of traveling in their neck of the woods(pardon the pun). :)

I suppose if it gives a sense of security and piece of mind, what's the harm? ThumbUp

Kevin, I was thinking that maybe deer whistles fall into the same category as biker bells

I have had bikes with and without them (bells given to me) and haven't had an accident or serious incident so I can't figure out if they have any efficacy :p

Had the deer whistles on the 2015 when I had the first incident, guess they don’t work too well. Never put them on the 2017.

I’m going to take advantage of upgrading a few items when they repair the front end, will only have to pay the difference in the parts.

Looks like it will take about 3 months to repair. Wife bought her a Can Am Spyder to ride, guess we’ll be riding that while waiting on getting the TriGlide repaired.

Deer Whistles and Gremlin Bells

Turns out that the University of Georgia did some scientific study of deer whistles that actually emitted a sound which apparently is not true of many that are sold. The results suggested that deer, even if they could hear the whistle do not change their behavior.

Now, we need to get the University to study gremlins and see if gremlin bells actually capture gremlins :Joker3:

These studies are a waste of time

There are so many variables in the world people place to much trust in these studies. The real study is out on the highway I'm sure there are exceptions but I think the whistles make a huge difference. I live where you can come on to a deer anytime day or night I have to look out the window to see what may be standing in the yard from Bear to coons. and everything in between. We had two close calls before I put whistles on Old Shiney none since. That doesn't mean it couldn't happen however I think they increase your odds and I'm liking the odds better now than without them. DSC00146.JPGDSC00147.JPG

Talk about coincidences!!!

The following happened just last night, two days after my earlier post.

It's the closest call I've had with a deer.

On the way home, around 7:30, I had a near encounter with a deer. (large doe)

Saw it running on the side of the road...slowed down...she stopped and was looking at me...I was looking at her...

I decided to speed up to get past...

At the same time, she decided to go ahead and cross the road.

IT WAS CLOSE! Thought for sure I was going to hit her.

Missed by about a foot!

btw, this does not put me off deer whistles. Don't know how much they help, but I do not think they hurt. And who knows??? She might not have stopped running if I had not had the deer whistles. Impossible to know.

I do know this- same type folks that have done studies on deer whistle efficacy have also done studies on loud pipes, concluding that loud pipes in no way help cagers be more aware.

There is NO DOUBT in my mind, that loud pipes, in some instances, absolutely help other drivers to be more aware of me.

Of course, just because the loud pipe studies are BS, does not mean the deer whistle studies are.
