Dag-gum Buzzards

Went for a nice ride on Sunday. Left Huntsville and rode on state highways (2-lane) to Dickson, TN to had lunch with our older son. On the way up, we were following a car that spooked a group of about 5 or 6 buzzards who were feasting by the side of the road. They took off and got about 3 feet off the ground by the time we got to where they were. They did stay to the side of the road, so we didn't hit any, but boy did they stink! I figure we were within about 3 feet of the nearest of them.

On the way home, we got to the same spot. We were not following any vehicles, so we were the ones that spooked them this time. They took off and if we both had not ducked our heads, we would have hit one with our helmets, or worse yet, perhaps our faces. Oh, the smell those things put off!!! I sure am glad we didn't scare the $h1t out of them - that would have been downright nasty. Almost gagged me just smelling them.

Other than that, it was a good day. Got to see the eldest, had a decent asian buffet for lunch, and the weather was perfect!

What....asian buffet, and not roadkill for lunch???? Where is your sense of adventure?
Those buzzards are ugly and stinky for sure! But they do provide a good service to clean up that roadkill for us, I guess.

Consider yourself lucky. I "busted" one wide open and spilled it's guts down the left side of the trike and the wife. First town we got to....the first stop was the car wash. The wife just threw her clothes away and changed in the service station restroom.

From that moment on...I have been paranoid about buzzards. I think they search-me-out wherever I go knowing that I took-out one of their kind. I swear...they like to circle above waiting for the right moment to attack.

Not only do you have to be careful of not hitting the Buzzard around here you have to swerve around what ever he was eating. Put your eyes on the Flying Buzzard and you will not see the road kill you are about to bounce over. A flat possum, turtle or snake not big deal, a hog or deer and its not gonna end well. :blush:

The secret is to make sure you get the real fine feathers off when you pluck it. Then shear the skin on the open flame then wash the outside a bite then flavor it up with your spices and then just like a possum slow roast over an open flame till done. Make sure you dampen the outside with some bourbon or beer (don’t use wine on a buzzard) it every once in a while roasting.

Buzzards and Hogs Both Smell

It wasn't a buzzard ~ but this is how I knew my wife was a keeper. When we first started dating we rode motorcycles a lot. One of our first dates was a dinner ride. We were on a small two lane road in rural West Tennessee. We met a semi-truck pulling a livestock trailer loaded with hogs. As we met, we rode through a liquid spray. I hoped for a nano-second that it could have been somebodies lawn sprinkler too close to the road. Nope!!! Nothing smells worse than hog urine, unless it hog urine cooking on Harley motor. We did the same thing 1550vt posted. First stop was the nearest car wash. Fifteen years later, we are still taking dinner rides.

Let's see over the years that I can "quickly remember" bein' hit by......

(1) Turkey Buzzard...barely grazed me
(3) Hawks...two on the Bike, one in the chin/shoulder..."not good"
(at least 6 or so) Assorted Small Birds, like Mocking Birds, Robins, etc.
(2) Large Guineas...both luckily on the Bike, not me
(2) Turkeys, also on the Bike
(3) Owls...two medium sized on the Bike, one very large on into the (glad that day) Full Coverage Helmet. Knocked my head backwards, left hand off the handlebar, left foot off the foot peg, butt off right side of seat....barely saved the Bike from a "Front Wheel Tucked Highside"....Big Birds are not what You wanna hit by any means.......GLAD YOU MISSED THE BUZZARDS...:wtg:

....and yeah, Buzzards are our toughest competition in Tennessee for roundin' up supper after screechin' brakes....gota' be quick before they get all of the "good parts"......Buzzard Stew Recipe comin'...:laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

I think what you wanna do is cook it like we do with Sandhill crane here- slow roast it on a rock placed in the oven for 8 hours... then you take it out of the oven, thow away the crane/buzzard and eat the rock... Chumbly- :groan:
