Years ago my Dad had bears that would come ravage his bird feeder. He ended up having to electrify the feeder and lay down a grounding pad to teach the bears not to mess with the bird feed. Didn't take many jolts to wise them up.... :gah: :gah:
We had automatic deer feeders [Whole Corn 250Lp] hanging 25 feet high between two trees on block and tackles, And the bears would just grab the winch cable and pull on it so the corn would fall out like a salt shaker......Where theres a will the Bears will find a way..
Deer and raccoons (also squirrels and possum) go after ours in backyard. It got expensive buying new feeders all the time after they'd break hitting the ground. Wife just brings it in at night now.
I did paint the limb once with tree trimming sealer, coons didn't like that!
I started using a Slinky 11 years ago. The first day and old, granddaddy squirrel almost made to the feeder on the sixth try. 10 squirrels were watching him and learning. I removed granddad from the scene and the remaining squirrels have yet to figure it out. Until then granddad defeated every "preventer" I tried. Slinky still winning.
My father-in-law still laughs when telling his feeder story. Him and his old buddy used to have a morning cup of coffee on the back porch and watch a squirrel go up his feeder and eat the seed. His buddy had him coat the pole half way up with axle grease. Squirrel goes up, hits grease, slides back down, stops at the bottom and turns and looks right at them for a second, then just slowly creeps away like he was embarrassed or something!
