brake pedal disengaed

My son, while I was out of town, some how did something to the brake pedal and now the brake does not stay up and rear lights come on. I noticed a wire disconnected way down at the bottom of the brake shaft. Is this the problem or what? Thanks

Need a little more info, what is this on? Did he take off the pedel then it didn't work right?The wire that is hangkng down,does it have a wire connecter on the end or just a bare wire?Are there any empty wire connecters or holders in the reach of the wire?My initial thought is for some reason he took the pedel off but did not put it back on in the same spot meaning you will have to remove it and reset it in the right spot, which should make the light work right.
