It is that time of the year when it is perfect for riding, but be aware that with the farmers in the fields the deer are moving around,so be especally careful when riding in the evening and in the dark and for thoses who live in areas where there are wild turckeys watch out for them.
Happy and safe riding.

You are right. Just coming home, and in my development, twice in the last 2 weeks, deer have run right in front of me, and I mean 25' across my path. Exercise caution, indeed.

While on the subject, years ago, while driving (the cage) through the Pocono's, and going very slow (it was snowing and dusk), a deer RAN INTO THE SIDE OF MY CAR!!! He bent the left front fender & hood, & went down on his front knees. I was stopped. He go back up, turned around, and ran back into the woods. $1100 repair job!

Deer, Racoons, Opossums, Turkeys, Rabbits, Squirrels, etc. every day.....I live in this type Area.....You adjust to never lettin' Your guard down and havin' near misses...;)

We have lots and lots of deer and other wildlife here in CenTex, all four seasons. Have to be extremely cautious when riding roads with trees or undergrowth close alongside. Spooky to see deer's eyes reflecting lights at nighttime - especially when there are fawns with the herd.

Not only the wildlife but as you mentioned it is harvest time in a lot of places so when riding the back roads and topping a hill beware that there may be a slow moving combine moving from field to field on the asphalt. Best solution is to go over the hills at a slow enough speed to emergency brake this time of the year. Ride safe.

I had my up-way-too-close-and-personal meeting with a deer a few years back. I think one time is enough for everyone! I sure don't want another one!

Just as a note to this Thread....a friend of mine wrecked on Monteagle Mountain yesterday morning on His VTX1300R after hittin' a Deer in the fog. Totaled His Bike, and He is scheduled for knee surgery tomorrow (nothing "REAL" serious, but never good)....happens regularly here...:(

Another afterthought: friend of a close friend was riding his Harley Ultra in Wyoming on the back roads - speeding, of course - hit a BUFFALO! Luckily his wife was riding behind him and called 911. Messed up the buff, of course, and put Bob in the hospital for a long time. Has rods in his back and a new road name (not a stretch): Buffalo Bob. No joke.

OOOooooh, not good.....Mitzie and I were on the Foothills Parkway 2-up last year on a Honda DN-01 Motorcycle and just barely missed a Black Bear that ran out in front of us....."by inches".....mighta' not been pretty....:(

October 18, 2009 Noon. I was riding along FM 1431 (Thats farm to market roads for you non-Texans)

I was doing 70 MPH when a doe was chased out of a cornfield. I T-boned her and we both went down. Remember, this was noon. Eventually 4 days later I got up as I was released from the hospital. She went to Bambi heaven and my bike was on two wheels at the time went to Suzuki heaven. I am a lucky guy.

This is a photo of deer taken last week. It is my front yard at 4 PM.

That is why I put additional riding lights on my trike. They are mounted just under my regular lights and point slightly towards to the sides of the roads. Oh, I have a photo of it also. Guess me being a photographer pays off.

Should of got his insurance info before he left.

Last week I went for a ride just to ride. Had no destination in mind so I let the bike lead itsself. Went on backroads for a couple of hours and ever mindful of deer. Did not see any until I got on a six lane highway in the city limits of Copperas Cove. One came across the highway from the opposite side I was going. I had time to brake, and was lucky to miss her by 10-15 feet.

I was shook up a bit and when I got home wrote a letter to a member of our city council whom is also a trike rider. I asked that the city authorize and pay for a professional deer hunt within the city limits.

Here is his response:

Thank you for the letter on the Deer problem, the E-mail will be forward on up the line, and I will asked that the item be placed on the Councils agenda ASAP Thanks again for your concern. Danny

I hit a deer last year with my 96 GW/CSC causing $4500 damage, mostly tupperware. I was traveling down a 2 lane country road about 50mph and the the deer jumped from the woods on my left striking the left front side fairing, knocked me about 10 feet off the road. Thank heaven I was on a trike and able to get it back on the road without hitting anything. It killed the deer and I did not miss my lunch appointment, even though parts were falling off. Here in NC where I live, there are deer everywhere and at all hours. RIDE SAFE.

Deer, various small animals, farm trucks and tractors. Another thing to watch out for is wet leaves. Wet leaves on wet leaves can be as slick as ice. Even on a trike it can cause skittishness or loss of control. Something else to be aware of this time of year.

Yep, While on two wheels a couple of years back, I made a wide swing u-turn as I saw a friend working in his garage. The turn took me into the far side of the road just before the gutter where I applied a touch of rear brake.

Down I went as I hit wet leaves that I had never seen. Bit of road rash and a slightly bruised ego, but no one saw me fall. My wife saw my skinned up knees and brought the peroxide.

Good point Ozarkryder.

Watched a Harley Trike slide the rearend out on wet leaves Sunday on Monteagle Mountain. I was talkin' to Him later at the BP.....said it gave Him a real "pucker moment"....was sideways before He knew anything was wrong.....'Tis the Season Folks, Critters and Mother Nature givin' us some obstacles.....:wtg:

Last year a neighbor in La. hit a deer with his pick up truck. Did a lot of damage to the front. He decided to even things up a little he would take the venison home and fill up the freezer. Good plan until one of his PC jealous neighbors turned him in for keeping the victim. He , the driver with a messed up truck got a ticket for hunting without a license. Go figure.

Opinions on deer whistles?? Worth it, not worth it??

For the $10 or $15 they cost that is pretty darn cheap insurance. I ride in deer infested terrority every day. I can't tell if its the whistles or my engine they hear, but they - the ones that are not running in front of me - look up.

Opinions on deer whistles?? Worth it, not worth it??

Heh, Heh, Heh.:) Not to promote another forum, I am on the Steve Sanders Goldwing Board, and they have a thread about deer whistles. There are more than 4000 posts in that thread alone. The general consensus is they don't do any harm and may keep some deer away. I've got them on the Harley, but not on the trike. Deer run in front of me over the years on the Harley: some. Deer hit on the Harley: none. Deer run in front of me over the years on the trike: some. Deer hit on the trike: none. My opinion is in agreement with Comanche - cheap insurance, can't hurt.

All Research on the Whistles is they don't work but I can tell you my Cherokee has had they since day #1 and No Hits...my wife on the other hand is a Bambi Magnet (even with the whistles)...she even got T-Boned by a Big Buck and he nailed the Fuel Tank...
The Insurance Co loves us...;-)

I have them on PEARL.I asked a friend of mine that owns a body shop and he sez they will call them up as well as anything he knows.
