TOI - South Africa
Hey guys from sunny SA, well not so sunny today but anyways.. I was involved in a bike accident a few years ago, damn minibus taxi pushed me of the road!, and I am now paralysed and wheelchair bound. So the natural thing to do for a full blooded biker boy is to upgrade to 3 wheels. 4 wheels are way too many! Tried a car for a while, but man that was the longest month of my life and I sold it to buy a trike kit locally. The frame has a coil over shock beetle suspension and i'm running a 1600 twinport. Springer type front end. Upgraded rear brakes from the right handle bar and front brake from the left. Clutch lever mounted on the shifter between me legs, but i just managed to get hold of a auto beetle box, yay me :) all i still have to do is fit the newly acquired auto box, transmission as you folks would call it, and design a lift to get my wheelchair on it, then its just painting and wiring. Unfortunately finances dont allow for chroming now :( but at least there's alot of polished stainless steel for the bling effect:) If all goes well it should be on the road by end January. And believe me, I can not wait to take to the open road! Its been heart wrenching going to rallies lately and not having my own toy! After that a reverse trike perhaps, just for those rainy days like today! So thats me in a nutshell. If there is anyone here thats done a similar conversion for a disabled rider, let me know perhaps we can exchange notes. I will post pics of my progress so far shortly.

Hello diff! Welcome to TrikeTalk! We actually have several riders with disabilities on here, and I'm sure they will be in touch and share their wisdom with you. It is great to have a new member from South Africa (where I was born). I hate to hear about your accident, but you are right --- there is definitely a way to still be out in the wind, and triking is it!

Thanx for the welcome guys. @ Wheels: I'm only using 'bound' cos my trike is not on the road yet! I have the same idea for my chair, i will be using a wiper motor to tilt it over onto the fender cos i dont have stomach muscles so that'll just make it easier. I'll post some pics in the next day or so, just got to slap the camera around a bit first to get the pics on the pc.
