Advice on broken tail light

I have a 86 Honda gl1200 with a Lehman conversion. The lens on the rear turn signal got broke. Need to find a lens or complete turn signal. Option 2 is to replace both turn signals. The existing rear turn signals are mounted on the surface of the fenders about halfway between the mud flap and the top of fender. Flushed mounted with a curvature to match the radius of the fender. The light is tear drop shape with a slightly rounded pointed top with a slightly flat bottom. 7.5in tall x 3in wide. Chrome bass with a lens that starts at the bottom and goes half way up. Called Lehman and was told it was a Honda part.

Does anyone know if part is available or a good replacement? I know a picture is worth a thousand words and I am working on that if needed. Thanks

Try Ebay. There is usually a lot of parts available for the 1200. Most have pictures.

A picture would help a lot. Many members have parts stashed away and they might have one.

Sounds like what you may have is a after market hot rod or street rod tail light.Don't recall any Honda OEM teardrop style.Do a hotrod tailight search and look at images,you might find a match or close to it.

Here is a photo of the of the turn signals and the location on the fenders. If I can not find a vintage turn signal some suggestions for new ones that would fit on the curvature of the fender and large enough to cover the existing mounting holes would be appreciated. <br />

Looks like a VW Bug turn signal to me.

Call Lehman back. they thought you were talking about the Honda lights on the bags. That light is deffintly a leman part. Send them that pic.

Thanks Seabill, I will start looking in that direction, The Lehman tech probably was not even born when it was made and the VWs were so popular. Great info, makes sense, would fit nicely on the curvature of the fender. Would work if i can find it in amber. Maybe find a two filament lamp with red lens unit and rewire for a running/turn signal? Is there anything saying the turn signal needs to be amber? Just trying to come up with different options if I am not able to find a amber amber lens.<br />

That particular light is often used as a front fender light on bikes of that vintage. You should be able to find it in the JC Whitney catalog under lights.

I am receiving a lot of good ideas. I emailed Lehman and sent them the pic, waiting on reply. The front turn signals of the VW beetle were some what close. Spent many hours on ebay searching for something that would work. Called a couple of Lehman dealers. The first dealer wished me good luck. The second dealer who was refereed by a TT member remembered those lights and described them very accurately but could not remember where they came from. Suggested to try looking up in a couple of drag specialty books. Have not tried that yet. I did try to look for numbers or markings on the light itself. On the inside was the type of bulb to use, never got mounting bolts loosened yet to see if there was anything on the bottom. My big hands wont fit between the tire and fender. I will go back to jc whitney and do some more looking.

Take the tire off! Not being a SA here. Very interested in reading the source for this lamp. Very likely the manufacturers logo is on the base of the housing. I worked at a GM exterior lighting division and the bottom of the housing of that type lamp is exactly where the "Guide Lamp" logo was placed.

One other thing you might try. If you have a truckers store near you check out the running light section. Some of the larger truck stops have running light sections that gives the missus too many ideas with all of the variations of lights and mounts.

On my MT conversion, the taillights just weren't very bright... old style bulbs. Like you, I found very little clearance between tire & fender. As I wanted to pull a trailer, I looked & found a set of surface mount LED taillights that were a great replacement.

They do bend a little, you could ask the seller if he thinks they'll work for your application. I love 'em, very bright.
