Across Yellowstone, over Beartooth Pass & Back in 1 Day (2021)

Today is gonna be a Red Letter day!

Got up early to see the sunrise...

...and get an early start, heading toward...

...the West Entrance of Yellowstone.

No line to speak of...

...and we are in the park before most everyone else...well, except for the residents.

Today we are riding from the Southwest side of the park, all the way to the Northeast Exit...

...it is smoky and hazy...

...but this is the day we have set aside... (check out the little bit of snow on those mountains!)

...to ride 90 miles thru the park...

...and then another 70 miles, over Beartooth Pass...

...Then we're going to turn around, and do it all over again! This guy will prolly be close by 10 hours from now when we are coming back. lol

A look back, early on. Gonna be a great day!

Continuing on thru the park toward Cooke City.

The terrain is so varied throughout the park...

there is construction going on over near Tower Falls, so we are...

...taking a little longer route thru Mammoth Hot Springs...

...we've turned east...

...not quite halfway...

...having a blast riding thru Yellowstone!

Not many people in this part of the park this morning...

...but there are a lot of bison.

It's crazy how much smoke there is...

...but the closer up views you don't see it as much.

Getting closer to the northeast exit....all those dots out in the field are bison!

We are near the far side of the park...entering into the woods and climbing to the exit.

A look behind at Kurt as we climb into the woods...

We left Idaho this morning, crossed into Montana, then into Wyoming and now we have left the park and are back in Montana. Silvergate is just a few miles outside the NE entrance...

...and just a couple miles past Silvergate is Cooke City...

...and now we are on the 212, aka Beartooth Scenic Byway, aka Beartooth Pass...

...it dips back into Wyoming for awhile. A look back at Kurt as we barely begin the climb to Beartooth Pass.

We're into the twistys proper now. Part of the road fell into the canyon, so the little 2 lane is down to 1 lane as they do construction work.

Climbing to the first meadow area...

...we are really surprised at how little snow there is.

The road is still amazing with all the "fun ahead" signs...

We are here every 2-3 years, and it never gets old...

You can see just a few curves in this next pic, AND an amazing lack of snow.

This is Mary's most favorite road, and all the times we've ridden it, we've never seen grass or rocks at this point.

This was an amazing day of riding. The scenery is spectacular and humbling. The verticals are huge. If anyone reading this thread has a chance to ride this country it is a must. I hope to go back at some point and ride it again.

Yes, was a great day! Next time make sure there are no fires clouding up the skies, and that there is more snow on the ground!

...those lakes of melted snow are around 10,000 feet elevation.

...what a perfect day of riding. This road never gets old.

Center bottom of this photo you can see a little glimpse of one of the curves we are headed toward...

...a look back at Kurt after exiting a "20 mph" curve.

Yeah, it's pretty steep in some sections...

Before you know it we are in Red Lodge. Mary and I have stayed at this Inn a couple of times.

Gotta hit up Bone Daddys in Red Lodge.

That was fun. Now we get to turn around and do it all over again...from the opposite directions.
