I am sure this has been discussed before but I can't find any information on it.

My question or concern is what is the best option if you find yourself having to leave the road while riding a trike------------stay with the trike or separate yourself from it.

Are there any rules of thumb about this?

What got me to thinking about this is I was at a meeting last weekend and it was safety related. They said that if you are on two wheels and the bike goes down, get away from it as quickly as possible. They didn't have any advice for a trike rider.

Since a trike is more stable then a two wheeler I would stay with the trike, you may be able to have what is called a controled crash.
Like any motorcycle be sure to have your helmit on.

I cant say what is right but I had no Choice on May 31 I was going around a curve at 20 - 25 MPH when the curve turned real sharp with no indication (Well After 75K of safe riding). I slid in some gravel and when I tried to pull out of the curve I slid into a ditch that was about 18IN deep. My passenger flew off the bike and landed about 4 feet from the trike. According to my sister I had to be dramatic. I tried riding the Trike out but I was thrown thru the right side of the wind shield and I took out the Right Mirror with my body. I was in the air for about 15 Ft when I landed my sister said I rolled 3 times. I don't remember anything from the time I hit the Ditch and the time I was getting up from the accident. Both of us are OK. I got up and walked to a house about 1/4 mile away to have them call for a ambulance for us since I did not know where we were to give location. I tried to stay with the Trike but just could not. The Police officer said what saved me from serious injury was the Safety Equipment i had on.(Good Helmet, Armored Jacket, Good Boots and Armored loves).

I did find out that My insurance company would not cover my Medical because I did not have some sort of added policy to it to include Rider, My sister was covered for medical.
So i would say to everyone ask them what would happen if you are in a accident involving your fault if you are covered? also found out that I am not covered even in my car. Well I am covered now. Yes I have always kept Full Coverage on my Bikes and Cars But Full Coverage does not mean Full in all cases.

I had a bad accident on my Goldwing almost 2 years ago. Leg seperated at the knee and about 20 breaks. I was just a piece of jello on the side of the road. 10 surgeries and months of hospital and rehab. I have a Suzuki trike
today.
How are you going to seperate from your bike? Your hanging on for "dear life." The only thing that survived my wreck was 2 rings a broken watch, a wallet and one sock. My helmet may have saved my life. The Good Lord was good to me!!!!

I believe that you should stay with your bike/trike as long as you can...I've heard of people intentionally putting their bikes down if they think an accident is inevitable. The second you go down/ or leave the unit, you've lost all control (even the little you might have had). This said, let me also say that you really have very little choice during a violent crash... your body is going to do what it and physics want it to do. To discuss whether to stay with the ride or leave it is really a moot point... I had an accident two years ago, so I believe I know what I'm talking about in this regard.

What Chumbly says makes a lot of sense. And that choice is something to be made in a nanosecond dictated by the circumstances at the time. There just cannot be a hard and fast rule.
