My Bike runs at about 1/4 way all the time you ride it but the moment you get to a red light or slow down in town she heats up to 3/4 way alot of the time. I can hear the fans kick on. During the hotter summer months this baby gets up there near the hot line often. Is this normal? or any mods to help her run cooler in town

I do have anti freeze and proper water levels

Have you checked the fluid level? Checked the overflow tank level? Drain all the antifreeze and replace with new. Fan coming on at red lights is to be expected. Getting up to 3/4 is a little high. My Honda VTX comes on at 216 and off at 206. Runs down the highway at 186.

yes changed 2 months ago, checked again last week

I dont have a number gauge so i dont know exact temps, its a 1989

When you changed the coolant did you Burp the system real good to get all the air out?
Was it running hot before you changed the coolant?

System may need a good flushing if previous fluid had been in there for a while.

Was it running hot before you changed the coolant? SAME AS NOW which is why i changed the fluids

read above

Just a thought Chris.....

You might want to back flush the radiator itself. Not the inside but the outside. I'm not familiar with the GL1500 but I know on 1800 the radiator is prone to getting a lot of bugs on the back side of the radiators and that reduces air flow. Every once in a while I reverse flush them and it amazes me the amount of junk that flows out!!

Might not help but sure won't hurt if you are careful. :xszpv::xszpv:

<update>

I saw the link trikerdan added... If you have not replace the coolant and flushed the engine in a few years that too would be a good idea...</update>

Question;;;; are you sure BOTH fans are operating?

I personally havent visually checked to see if both fans are coming on, i can hear the fans(S) come on, i took it to a cycle shop and had him check it cause i thought a relay was out and he said they for sure came on. I will read up on the back flush thing and pull the front apart and verify both fans are working soon

I am the first one to admit that I know very little about GL1500s Chris. What I was talking about is that on GL1800s bugs and other small bits of road debris passes through the protective mesh up front of the engine area and collects on the back side of the radiators. This restricts airflow causing heat issues. If your GL1500 has the same collection point then it's possible that is the problem. I use a garden hose without any nozzle on it and quite briskly spray/flush the radiator from the outside toward the inside. I have also gone as far as to spray up in the collections area and let it set an hour before flushing. If the bugs have baked on, the soaking seems to soften them up so they will wash out the front of the bike..... I hope you get that sorted out. Overheat issues are a pain in the butt!!
