4.5" Mufflers on a Trike

Ok, so I have been looking at new mufflers for my FLHXXX for a month now. So many brands, shapes, sizes, db levels, and prices! Anyway, I am guess it really isn't an issue, but has anyone put 4.5" mufflers on their trike? Any clearance issues whether with the trike or the ground? I know, 1/2 difference overall isn't a huge difference but I figured I would ask those who know. There are a few on my list of possibles right now in the 4.5" variety.

Also while I am at it, opinions or experiences with well made mufflers that are loud but don't necessarily drown out the radio when at cruising speed are welcome.

Thanks y'all!

I have 4 inch on mine and there is very little room around the opening on the body, plus the mufflers will be a 1/2 inch lower to the ground and more likely to rub,but who knows,i would hate to buy them then find out they wont work.

Vance & Hines 4.5" Monster Rounds. Not loud at all (wish they were) but have a deep tone. I listen to the radio all the time.

Here's a pic of some 4" rounds-

Certainly looks like there is enough room for 4.5" to fit.

Regardless of the size of pipes you go with, you will enjoy the benefits of a Comfort Lift that will give you a bit more clearance.

If you are not locked into a 4.5" pipe, here is a pipe that has a great sound, and it is a top performer too!

Clint, I also have the Monster Rounds on my Trike. I wasn't really happy with the sound (Loud) either I installed the W258 Thunder Torque inserts from DK Custom.

I removed the baffles re-installed the tail piece & put the inserts in about 3/4 " inside the inside edge of the tail pieces. If not loud enough you can turn the insert a bit to make things to your liking. The improvement all around was great ! Better louder sound & I was also able to get my tune down to almost a fine art. Improved fuel millage around 3-4mpg. Most likely would be better millage if I didn't like to play ....

!

Also got the low end torque back I lost from an open exhaust. It needs some back pressure.

Some not a lot.

The only difference I made in the install was to drill the hole to 5/16" & not 3/8" as recommended in the instructions.
Very inexpensive mod.

This has 4" Monster Rounds. Not much area left for 4.5", but would fit, just mighty close to the eyebrow above the muffler.

This last year at Sturgis a couple fellows riding trikes had Vance and Hines their Twin Slash (#16763) installed. OMG !!!! They sounded great. I have a pair of their Deluxe slip-on that they designed for the trike with lots of ground clearance. Sound good but after hearing the Twin Slash I've been saving my nickels to buy a pair of those. Both trikes had the lifts from DKCustom installed, as I do, which gave them plenty of clearance.

We are a dealer for Vance & Hines so if we can help you out, just drop us a line or give us a call. You might be able to beat our price on them but I doubt you can beat our customer service. ThumbUp
