Way back in July of last year, I posted some info on a trike I had purchased in the DFW area while at a school in Dallas. It was partially disassembled, (a well meaning nephew attempted to fix an unknown problem) Read:dropped valve, hole in piston. This is an update to that story:

With my currently un-heated garage and a ton of studying to do for my new career, the trike sat idle until this past month. I'd gathered parts I thought I'd need through the winter and prayed for some warmer weather. Well last month I removed the right cylinder head and did find the broken valve PLUS the hole in the piston. I contimplated splitting the case to install a new piston assembly but instead, opted for a lower milage long block 1 year newer. I have a cousin that has a rather severe case of ADHD,BUT who is a true genius when it comes to bikes! It's hard for him to hold a steady job but has many customers that he does work for out of his garage. I asked him if he would help me do an engine swap in the 'Wing-trike, he said sure!

So began the journey. Last Tuesday, he came over and in almost less than 2 hours had the broken motor removed! If you've ever saw a "fast motion" video of something being disassembled that's what it reminded me of!!! As most all of you 1500 'Wing folks know, there are about 3 miles of vacuum lines and wires wrapped and connected to the motor! I asked him if they needed to be labeled? "Nope, they just have to be plugged into the right ports when we're done!!" was his reply!!

Adam came back over on Thursday to re-install the donor motor. Again about two hours, and with VERY little actual help from me, the new to the trike motor, was hanging in the chassis where it belonged!

Fast forward to yesterday, Adam arrived to rebuild the carbs and finish routing all of the wires and vacuum lines. I really didn't think that we'd (He) would get as far as we did but we actually got the trike to turn over and got things like the lights, horns and turn signals to operate!

Having issues with fuel pump not operating. I do have power to the pump when it should, I suspect the 2 gallons of fuel that sat in the tank for some SIXTEEN ODD YEARS may have taken it's toll on the pump motor. I'll look into that this morning after church and before we go out to Mom's Day dinner with the family. So I'm getting excited to actually drive this trike. I've only ever driven one for about two miles and you can't really get a feel for it in that amount of time.

Below are a couple of pics of the trike. The first one in the pole barn is where it sat for 16 years. The second one is once I'd put a little "spit shine" on it in the hotel parking lot on the weekends I wasn't in school.

I'll post again with more tales on getting this thing running and dialed in as soon as there is more progress.

Thanks for listening,
Larry Gill

The original plan was to put this trike together for my bride. Now you'd have to know my wife, she's not someone that asks for a lot. She DID decide she wanted to move from her Yamaha VStar 1100 to a "trike of some kind"...So I found the deal on this trike and jumped on it.

In the mean time while I was at school (remember, she didn't know about the deal on the Goldwing trike) she test drove a Can-Am Spyder. Well she was hooked! So up the driveway I come with my new "barn find"!! She wasn't impressed!

So it has now become a "Flip This Trike" scenario! I fully intend to trike my 1999 Valkyrie, but I first have to sell this trike AND my wife's Yamaha VSar to facilitate her getting her Spyder. So as soon as I get this trike "dialed in" on to the auction block it goes!

Well a year has passed and I'm getting close to a test ride on my 1500 trike I purchased in Tx. last year. My cousin and I removed and replaced the broken motor (bad belt, broke valve, hole in piston) We've got the motor running and are starting the job of finding and installing all of the"tupperware"on the trike. Rebuilt the auto fuel control valve that shuts fuel off to the carbs when the engine isn't running. I've never seen so many wires and vacuum lines in my life! Now my cousin has gone M.I.A. and can't be found! I'm trying my best to piece this back together myself, but it's not been easy! Was just wondering if there are any 1500 Goldwing guys out here in Southeast Michigan that would want to stop by and give me a little guidance on finishing this project up?

Don't know much on 1500 maybe this will help.... FYI

Solidbob,
Thank you for the helpful suggestions. I've just come back in from the shop, having a night to sort things out in my mind helped. I had a turn signal start blinking rapidly after they worked last night! Checked the bulbs (with ohm meter) and they were good. Went to the connection that connects the wiring loom to the trunk and found a wire not "clicked into the plug. Re-set the spring clip to grab better, plugged it back in and BINGO, correct turn signals! I guess I have to stop being overwhelmed with the tasks at hand and take them one at a time.

Well, I've got everything pretty much bolted back on with the exception of two lower panels and, of course, the wheels. While installing the tail light lenses, I accidentally dropped the lense on the ground and broke it so I've ordered a new one from Speedway motors, should be in in a few days. Was getting too late this evening so I'll wait until tomorrow to test it out. A little nervous, sort of like when I rebuild a motor for one of my hot rods. Can't wait until tomorrow to try her out! I'll report back as soon as I get back into the garage!

Well, Took her out for a test drive yesterday and it ran well. I've discovered that the front axle bearings are shot and that I may have to look at the bearings in the gooseneck. It's real "shakey when you go over any rough surfaces on the road. I got back to the garage and lifted the front end up and you could wiggle the front wheel on the axle and feel "grumbling" as you rotate the wheel. Have called every Honda bike dealership in the Southeast Michigan area to try to get a set but no one has any in stock. Guess I'll have to order a set. Was hoping to get a set so I could go for a little longer ride on it this weekend. Oh well!!

Well, My Bride test drove the 'Wing trike, several times, but still says that she wants a CanAm Spyder. No problem, We'll sell this one and her 2006 Yamaha VStar 1100 Classic and use the proceeds to purchase the CanAm of her dreams! I am going to sell my 1993 Goldwing and purchase a trike kit for my Valkyrie. I really enjoy driving the trike and really love my Valkyrie so....

Triking the Valkyrie has been at the front of my thought process for some time. When you mentioned a match made in heaven, you're right! "Mean Colleen" and I will be married 35 years the 22nd of this month! I've always liked trikes, even before I had a motorcycle I thought they were cool! Especially the "meter maid" trikes I saw as a kid downtown in Detroit!
I'm gonna finish polishing up Colleen's Yamaha and (hopefully) the rain will quit so I can put it out in front of the house. We are on M-29 that is frequented by maybe several hundred vehicles daily so it's a good spot to try and sell something.

Well finally got the trike's bugs ironed out! Just in time to Take IT and my wife's Yamaha VStar 1100 Classic to a dealer in Chicago to trade them in on a CanAm Spyder!! She'll be commanding a 2014 RT-S Spyder with the semi-auto trans. She's very anxious to get her new (to her) trike. She's tried to ride the 'Wing/Motor Trike, several times, but kept coming back to the Spyder. I think I've mentioned that my wife doesn't ask for a lot of things, so when she DID say "That's what I want".... Well I've tried my best to see that request through. We're leaving very early Thursday morning with the Yamaha in the bed of the pick-up and the trike in the enclosed trailer. (no room for both in the trailer) And hopefully come home with the Spyder in the trailer!! I'll report back as soon as I have more to share!

This may be the last entry on this subject. Last Thrusday my wife, Colleen, and I made the trip to Elmhurst Illinois, home of iMotorsports Inc. to trade in the Goldwing GL1500 Motortrike and the Yamaha Vstar 1100 Classic on a 2014 CanAm Spyder RT-S !!

From the time we pulled up until the time we drove off, the whole transacton was wonderful! I (we) give high numbers to the whole staff, especially Jason Batory, our salesman, and Youthera Kay, their online sales rep.

All of the paperwork was sent to us at home to review and sign, streamlining the process.

The trade-in inspection went as I had hoped, with the exception of my leaking front shocks on the trike. After we sat down, we were able to negotiate a fair and equitable settlement for the repairs.

After we test drove the CanAm, and just before we started loading it, I noticed that the rear tire was a little thin on treads. Talked with Jason our salesman, the parts man, his mgr. and finally the owner about it. They said it would take some time to put a new tire on for us, (there was several appointments ahead of us), so they offered us a brand new tire "to go!" Very acceptable to us!!! They could have just said that it is "as is" but they went the distance and did the right thing for the customer. What customer service!!!!

We left Detroit about 0530 hrs on Thursday morning and were safe at home in the driveway at about 2345 hrs. Thursday night!

All and all a very pleasant transaction, Colleen still hasn't wiped the smile off of her face!! And that's a good thing!!

I'm having trouble uploading a pic to this post, as soon as I figure it out, I'll post the pic of the Spyder and it's happy new owner!!

Just want to mention, iMotorsports sells new Spyders as well as a BOAT LOAD of used bikes & trikes of all makes.
Look them up on line at: Imotorsportsinc.com
Tell 'um, Larry sent ya!!!

See ya on the Spyder section!!!!
