Trike Tire Air Pressure

Read this technical PDF document that provides a great explanation on tire pressures. I personally like around 20-22 unless I hook up the cargo or camping trailer. I may bump it up when running Twisties for the day as well as front tire pressure too. In those cases, I may bump rear tire pressure up to 24. It's a Lehman manual but the first section applies to all trikes.

pwhoever, that is an interesting read. But it leads to more confusion.

1- Lehman and others recommend 20-22
2- Tire manufacturers say not less than 26
3- For the CSC Encore conversion, CSC says 28

Maybe a better question is “what pressure is too low that will result in undesired riding results”. That could mean both safety and comfort.

Knowing the range from “too low” to “highest recommended” would allow some flexibility for each rider to find the pressure that results in the most comfort, without compromising safety.

The Lehman manual carefully explains the reasoning by trike companies and tire manufacturers for a higher pressure recommendation, liability reasons. And that should clear the confusion. You have to remember that these are car tires built for the weights you see on a car, not a trike. A trike weighs no where near what a car weighs so the higher pressure isn't necessary. The lower tire pressure warning is a result of previous litigation such as the Goodyear fiasco with the Ford Explorers as an example. The lower pressures discussed in the Lehman literature recommendation is used by many trike owners, myself included. If it was an issue, it would have been a big topic of discussion online and various other places. I have yet to hear of any issues related to running the lower pressure.
