Hang on to your side panels on those 1800's

I just read on another site that you could not get the side panels from Honda and if you did order them they are for sale for over $400.00 a piece!

Beware we will have people coming up to us and stealing our side panels! Laugh, but they are stripping all the copper out of air conditioners in house just for the brass. This will make honest bikers do crazy things!

I have a 96se 1500 with a 06 lehman kit while on a ride last summer I lost my left rear one, FORGOT TO FOLD PASSENGER FOOT BOARD UP).

I got a new one of matching color plus the emblems for 240 dollars from hondadirect in Ohio plus new rubbers. Never had that problem before because my late wife was always on the bike to. So if you are riding solo on a 1500 or a 1800 be sure to fold the passenger foot boards up.

I learned the hard way.

After losing one of my side panels on my 1500 I also replaced through Honda direct. I put tethers on to keep my mind at ease and avoid another costly loss.

Peter:

Can you describe what kind of tethers and how you put them on? Pictures?

Thanks.

A tether is a cord or fixture that anchors something movable to a reference point which may be fixed or moving. There are a number of applications for tethers: balloons, kites, tethered wind-energy conversion systems, anchors, tethered water-flow energy conversion systems, towing, animal constraint, power-kiting, etc

I'm not the person that responded with the great tether tip (thanks!!) ..... but here's what I am going to use Cable Tie Mounts, Cable Mounts, Cable Tie Cradle Mount, Adhesive Cable Mounts, Cable Tie Mount Metal

These should be in any hardware store, and possibly even in an auto parts store, or like Radio Shack, etc..

I'll use two per cover (just to be sure) and add some strong woven fishing line to tie them off to the frame, with enough slack to allow me to pop them off and set them on the seat, but not enough slack for them to hit the ground and get scraped if they fall off the seat.

That's a great idea. I'm going to do the same!

Replace the rubber grommets which is what (in most cases) causes the side covers to come off. The other is not getting them on correctly.
The grommets are low cost insurance. If the side cover does not snap into place replace the grommet.

Just a thought

That's "another" good suggestion along with the ties! ThumbUp

bought new grommets for my vtx, easily justifies the cost. If you use the square tye wrap mounts, I'd glue them on. used a lot of them in my electrical days and when they get warm, they peel off.

I read about people losing the covers awhile back so I took some 1/8" plastic covered cable that I got at Home Depot and swaged a bullet type electrical connector on the the ends and looped it through a hole on the cover and through a hard point on the frame.

They are VERY hard to disconnect so they hold great but you can pull them apart when needing to remove the cover.
