NEW TRIKE, THANKYOU family friends and emergency staff

TOI - New Zealand
After waiting all this for my trike, after some quick lessons drove for 2 hours followed by my wife and family friend, a nurse. Suddenly the trike veered to the left, over two lanes of the Freeway, hit the barrier arm and unconcious, last thing I heard was the crash, I flew 12 feet or more in the air and landed down a bank. My helmet saved me, broke a bone my left hand with mega bruising on my left side with an impact changing heart beat! All settled now after 3 nights four days in hospital. The trike has gone to the Harley shop for repair, I am repairing at home. Think I'll do better next time!!!!!!

Ian I'm staggered to read of this. The good news is that you're OK sort of!
Did something mechanical fail ??

All the best Baz. :wtg:

Ian, I thought I had bad luck but you have me beat. Thank goodness you weren't hurt any worse. That could have been real bad. Maybe by the time your hand heals your Trike will be ready. I know you've waited a long time for that Trike. Hang in there things have got to get better!

Ian, that is terrible news!!! Like Baz I'm wondering how it happened. But most of all, I am relieved and thankful that you are not more seriously hurt. Our prayers will be with you as you recuperate.

Oh my God! Please fully heal both you and the trike! When you can, tell us what happened so we can be aware of any potential issues with our trikes! We all are praying for your speedy recovery!

Ian,
Glad you're OK mate, but sorry to hear it happened that soon!
I had been riding since 1955 but had a long layoff from 1975 to 1999. In 1999 (while my wife was out of town) I got a wild hair and bought a new Harley, first bike in like 20 years, and promptly dropped it on my leg and broke both bones near my ankle. That didn't hurt near as much as when she got home and came to Hospital! At least yours was nearby so you didn't have to anticipate the whipping!
Heal up and ride-
John (Transplanted Brit from Newcastle)

Sorry about the crash. Sure could have been worse but bad enough. Heal quick and hope everything is better soon.

Thanks everyone. The sad thing was I was thinking about being home when my world changed! So, when my hand heals, 6 weeks, I'll be out there again Baz, we will ride together! Blessings to you all. Harleys make great bikes, Champion great kits which now include a hand brake! Ian.

Ian!! So sorry to hear of your troubles.....glad you are generally ok. I was riding through the big city today on business....pm me and next time maybe we can get a coffee and talk trikes!!

Took two church services today and off to physio tomorrow. Great sunny day here, lots of bikes and a trike where we had lunch! Hope to hear this week what the insurance company will do. Hope I haven't bent the frame! No fear of getting back on, but will do things more slowly for a while. The main thing is the healing of my boxer fracture and my left knee. Have a great Sunday tomorrow. Ian.:wave4::GrpHug1:

Sounds like you are doing pretty well, Ian. I am so glad to hear that!
Yes, taking it a little easy as you adjust to the new steering and feel of the trike will be good. But no worries -- it won't be long before you are finding it the best fun you've had in some time!!! :D Thank you for the update.

Glad you will be alright, sorry for your mishap. When I first rode my trike for the first time the same thing veered in to wrong lane, but I was able to bring it back in my lane. A thike handles a lot difference than a 2 wheeler. because of the counter steering. Took awhile to get the feeling of the trike. wishing you a speedy recovery.:AGGHH:

To answer the veering question. It was me, but the recommendation is that I get a steering damper fitted. I didn't handle the sensitive steering well. think I lifted my visor because of sun strike with my right hand and must have pulled the bars with my left.
Damage - New front tire, new handlebars and wiring, new crash bar and pod, new foot peg, fix fiber glass body, 3M.

I may be fixed about the time it is fixed!

Support from local dealer and Harley insurance excellent.Ian.:):wtg::pray::Angel::GrpHug1:

Dude,

Thanks for the candid response. I will likely be picking up mine this week, and hope not to have a similar experience. ...although, the Harley does have a steering damper. Heal up, and hope your ride is fixed up 100%.

Glad you are on the mend.

I have a steering dampener installed and the first ride after I pulled the lower fairings and put on highways pegs I did almost the same thing. I tried to kick down the pegs at 70 MPH. One peg has more tension than the other and it caused my upper body to shift a bit. I crossed 3 lanes and almost hit the center line barricade. Major adrenalin rush. And a learning experience about every action having a opposite reaction. Now I'm aware of it and pay much more attention to maintaining steering control.

Get well and get riding.

Ian, Glad you are going to mend along with the trike. Thanks for letting everyone learn from your experience.

Got my TOI patches today. All I need is a trike! Saw it yesterday, possibly three weeks from Monday to fix subject to parts. Other bits have to be fixed by other dealer as the Harley dealer doesn't do non Harley parts. That is ok. Should be live by the end of August. Exciting times. Booked accommodation today for HOG international rally in Dunedin. NZ Fedruary 17th to 19th 2012. Time for you guys to spread your wings! Ian.

Glad to here you are still with us Ian, the pain will end but the alternative is much worse,,,,I have not posted since around the time of TT rally when I Lost one of my best friends and riding buds a 1/2 mile from my house when a cage pulled out in front of him on 6/26,,,, he was an accomplished rider of near 40 years,,,, we rode nearly every sunday for breakfast and coffee,,,,I would have been with him had I not been riding to Lake Placid,,,,,he could not go along because or family obligations,,,,,wife, 2 kids and a business left behind,,, losing someone like that makes me reevaluate my riding, still have not decided when I WILL quit but when things like this happen I believe they are messages from the Maker! It is for each of us to decide what the message is,,,,, RIDE SAFE AND BELIEVE!

I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your buddy, Bob! His family and friends will be in my prayers.
