Oil Leak

I had seen a small amount of oil on the garage floor two or three times but couldn't see where anything on the trike was leaking. It was very light and clear so I knew it wasn't engine oil. The transmission oil was very light colored but was right where it should be on the dipstick. Didn't happen every time I used the bike so it was frustrating to deal with.

Long story short, it was the left rear shock. Turns out they are on factory back order so I guess I'm not the only one.

My dealer was able to find one at another dealership who was willing to part with one so I should be good for the weekend.

Just a heads up to anyone wondering about a few spots of very clean oil on the floor...

Tim, I had that same issue come up on my 2016 TGU when my wife mentioned some light oil on our painted garage floor. The fact that it was sort of behind the engine did not immediately make sense to me. I had to crawl up under the trike and see that at the bottom of the shock that there was a little drop of oil hanging off the lower end of the shock which is what alerted me to what was actually leaking. This happened a couple of years ago and they had a replacement shock for it fairly rapidly at the time. As Kevin from DK Customs has pointed out as well as others, our factory air shocks are crap.

I had a leaky RR shock on my 15 Freewheeler, the new service writer asked me how I knew, I said look at it its wet with oil

He said it looks like brake fluid so he stomped on the rear brake pedal too hard and broke the rear brake light switch, I just laughed and said can you fix this today

Went thru both shocks under extended warranty. Took 2weeks for them to recv them.

Did they replace the switch NOW ?

Oh yeah, when I got back from a road trip I traded it for a 17Freewheeler

I returned everything to stock before I traded it in

Just a note. The OEM air shocks can leak oil if the air pressure gets real low. I keep mine around 18-20 psi.

I never even thought about a shock leaking. I must be lucky because I've had lots of snowsleds, atv, bike etc and never had this happen. I broke a shock once but it never leaked.

I finally figured out the area it was coming from because I looked before I pushed it out of the garage. I really thought it might be brake fluid but my local dealer guessed "shock" right away.

I don't think this is the first one he's seen...

By the way, I keep the air pressure 30# or a little more. Maybe too much air but it rides pretty good so I leave it in that area..
