What is the OEM rear shock height on a Tri Ultra?

I have a chance to pick up some progressive adj shocks at a good price.

Thanks

Agreed, I have the 13” , but Kevin is now using the 14” . I’m sure Thers a reason for the madness , as I’m sure he will share.

More travel is less likely to bottom out and gives additional opportunity to absorb the harshness of dampening.

Think off road racing, more compliant with lots of travel helps the tires stay in contact wich in turn gives control and smoother ride.

My 13" have been on 17,000 miles & not bottomed. Set right by the builder, no complaints. George builds a great shock. I asked about the 14 & was told there would be very little diff. if any.

:D George doesn't know....he's never ridden them. He builds them, but we did all the testing. The difference is substantial.

More Travel allows significant changes to dampening, Let's just look at the off road scenario, jumping and bumps are constant, you want to keep your tires in contact with the road as much as possible, this is accomplish in several ways, valving, oil viscosity, spring rates and yes, TRAVEL. Overal the ride is smoothed and you achieve better traction as well, rougher the course, softer the suspension.

If you add travel, you are adding time and distance for dampening.

Maybe so,Maybe not.

I spoke with George this morning. He does not remember saying that...BUT, he talks to so many folks, and this is his really busy time of year.

From myself riding with the 13" for over 30,000 miles, and then switching to the 14", the difference is huge.

Because of this I actually sent him a copy and paste of your post, asking him if he said that, or if any of his people said that, because if they did it has been posted on the Trike Talk Forum and is erroneous information that some will read and believe.

Below is the response he emailed back to me.

Kevin, who knows how people hear things. I talk to 10 million people a week. I just talked to some guy for an hour on Tuesday. He asked me every imaginable question.

I sent him to you for the 14 in with a lowering kit for his motorcycle, not a trike, his motorcycle.

I actually tell people that we don't sell the kit for the Tri Glide. All We Do is build shocks. I don't know where some of these people come up with the things they say.

I tell the people that you guys at DK have done extensive testing on the 14 in for both the bikes and the Tri Glide. If you have any questions to call DK and they can explain the set up to you.

Here is a LINK to a report on shocks, including the 14".

btw, I am not saying he did not say that to you...only that it is not accurate, nor is it what he meant to communicate.

Put my new 14" and plates on yesterday, went for 100+ mile ride over roads I know well, huge improvement and absolutely no bottoming out where previously it would, Wife says the ride is significantly more comfortable.

As a test, I changed from 3 clicks to 1, todays ride of 75 miles was super smooth.

I'm sold, my money was well spent.

So Kevin you would recommend going with the 14" shocks over the 13" for the best control and ride?

My options are :

Change out to the 13" HD air shocks with comfort lift to the 13" shocks you have on sale and then a progressive monotube front fork kit.

or

14" shocks and comfort lift kit package you have and change out the fork oil with new oil.

Which would be the best bang for the Dollars spent?

2010 HD Tri Glide, Cams, Tuner, V&H Pipes and lots of Chrome. :)

If the 13" comfort lift kit would fit a FreeWheeler I could resell those brackets.

Thank you!

Found this forum from Talking to Dawn at D&K. So came here to see which would be the best rout to take on my suspension upgrade. The trike runs really good. To good for this suspension. She needs an upgrade.

Sorry for barging in with questions as I should have introduced myself first. Just anxious to get some upgrades on order.

Hi Tammy, welcome to Trike Talk.

For rear suspension the best ride you can get is with the 14" Trike Series Shocks™, the improvement will make you feel like you're riding a different trike!

Yes, the 13" Comfort lift you have will fit a Freewheeler.

Adding the 13" shocks is a very significant improvement also, but not as much as the 14".

If I had a choice between upgrading the front suspension and doing the 13" shocks, or changing the oil and doing the 14" rear shocks, I would do the 14" shocks.

If/when you do the front suspension, the Performance Springs with Intiminator Valves will give you a better improvement than the monotubes on your 2010.

Here's a front suspension chart taken from the Front Suspension Report that you can see HERE.

Being the 13’s I purchased last year are still harsh on the bumps , as they were set up for the 2 up ride, and I primarily ride 1 up,

So far I loosened up the spring adjustment 2 rounds. Gona try 2 more just to see if I can get them right. It rides like a dream with 2 up now, but 1 up is the major ride. And the hops are killing my back.

Double check your damping adjustment too. You should turn the adjustment screw clockwise til it stops, then turn it clockwise 3 clicks. This will give you the best damping.

Here's a LINK to all the instructions.
