Shipping a bike?

What options are there for shipping a 2 wheeler? I found several motorcycle shipping companies, and they charge a lot. Wondering if there is a lesser know/cheaper option? As in the left over space on a Mayflower van, or something else?

Their initial estimate is a good bit lower than the ones I got from motorcycle transporters so far. Didn't finalize the listing because I don't own the bike. The bike is calling me, but I'm in Fl, and it's in Va. Probably doesn't make sense to ship it, but just checking on my options.

We ship a lot on trips each year Steve. Our Dealer gives us the pallets the bikes come to him on and we put our bikes on the pallets. All the shipper has to do is stick them in the van. You may get a better rate if you can acquire an old pallet from a dealer, strap it on yourself and have the mover just lift it on and off at the other end. It can be loaded on one of those lift-gate vans and slid into the van and then out again on the other end. If the shipper does not have to fool with handling it....it's like they are simply shipping a crate.

He has not picked it up yet. Since he is comiing right by VA to me he may give you a special rate depending on if he has any other drop offs or pick ups close to you.

Wow Ray, I'm touched by your offer. I thank you for that. I live about 80 miles south of Tampa, so I can't imagine it would work out well for you. I'm not ready to do this anyway. Just trying to figure out my options. But again, thanks for that offer.

If I were to buy it, would almost be best to fly up and ride it home............

Yea Steve do that and when you come through N.C. you can stop and buy Boscoporp and me a bunch of beers. Then you can crawl your drunk shelf on the bike, take off, get stopped and locked up for DWI, wish we would answer the phone when you call from jail..LOL sorry got carried away..Good Luck with the bike, but if you do drive....

We brought a Trike from Pittsburgh to Conn. on a trailer we got at Tractor Supply/ Lowe's for $999.00 good news is you still have $999.00 worth of trailer or you can sell it for $800.00 + when you get home. movers wanted $ 800.00 . throw in the $100 for gas and you done

How soon does it need be done ? I don't have anything scheduled for New England at the present time but that could change tommorrow or next week ? --Was just out east two weeks ago (Upstate NY--Conneticut and New Jersey)

He told me it would be picked up at the end of this week or early next week but I have nopt hard any concrete conformation.

Getting back to Nana's comment about the ship-fly-ride. We do that every year and have it down to a fine art. Like I had mentioned, the local dealer saves his pallets from the MOCO and keeps us a stack. When trip time comes around and we have made our plans, we simply hire a trucker and a van to back-up to the Harley loading dock and tell him where to drop them off on the other end. We always plan the other end carefully and either use a dealer that has a loading dock and will cooperate (not that many will do either one). We usually have the trucker suggest a logistics terminal with a dock as close as possible to the destination airport.

We load them with the dealer's forklift on the van and make arrangements for a terminal on the other end to unload them and sit them on their dock. The trucker works out the pick-up and drop off schedule so they are on the ground when we fly in that day.

It cuts "days" off riding I-20, or some other interstate to get to Seattle, Portland or wherever else we want to go. It usually averages us around $300 a bike/trike. Depending on the bike mix, we can get as many as 24 in a 54-foot van. 20 is usually our average load.

Just ship 'em out....fly out and ride 'em back home.

Well, I decided the bike in question isn't special enough to warrant the rig-a-marole involved with a 900 mile away purchase.

Will shop locally. Was going to do that today, but a PGR mission for a fallen 19 yr old has come up. 19..... damn.
