My Mom always said to me; Never speak ill of the dead.....
So i'm keeping my mouth shut....!
Very hard!I'll go along with that, but it's hard.
Very hard!
Cassius Clay failed to answer the most important call of his life. His country needed him and he took the cowards way out. He may have been a great boxer, but in my eyes, he's still a little man.

Sorry, no matter how you look at it, a draft dodger is a draft dodger!
At least he didn't run off and hide in Canada or other countries, like thousands of others did. He stayed and fought for what he believed in, and eventually won.
(wow! I can't believe I just defended a Muslim, someone, shoot me!)![]()

Couldn't agree more.

What was dishonest, what was a trick...
He stood up, stated his reasons, and most importantly, faced and accepted the consequences....
He did not run to Canada, he did not go what we would today call "off the grid" and hide.
He didn't "DODGE" anything.
Are the Amish draft dodgers??
Are the Mennonite draft dodgers??

Ali found his religion when he was called to be drafted, then used that religion to keep from serving.
That has 'dodge' written all over it to me. He didn't run to another country to dodge, just to another religion.
Sorry, but none of what you are saying is changing my opinion. He was a great boxer. That is also my opinion.
So, I suppose you and I can just agree to disagree.

I don't have a problem with anybody avoiding the draft' Back then yes! Now no! .... A lot of people did, Hell even John Wayne did during WW2
I beg to differ....
I'm sorry but the FACTS on record do not support your assertion that he joined The Nation of Islam (NOI) to avoid the draft
You opinion is NOT based on facts at the time or now.
You assertion is incorrect
1964 - Converted to Islam (Some reports say he joined as early as 1962, but kept his membership under wraps to continue fighting)
Biography.com says - 1964
History.com - 1964
Wikepedia - 1964 (calculated)
http://www.biography.com/people/muha...5#olympic-gold
http://www.history.com/topics/black-...y/muhammad-ali
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhamm...eight_champion
1966 - Resisted the draft
In any case there is a 2 to 4 years difference in the time of conversion to called by the draft where he became a "dodger."..
The amount of time elapsed would indicate, HE did NOT join the NOI to avoid the draft. (which was not even on the Horizon yet)
This may or may not change your opinion of him, that is irrelevant,
It's ok not to like someone for whatever reason, but for whatever reason you must base your dislike on FACTS, not made up memes to suit your dislike.
We can agree to disagree, about your opinion, but there can be NO such agree to disagree when it comes to the FACTS of how something happened, or if your OPINION is based on real provable FACTS.
But by all means... don't let facts get in the way of opinion based judgement.
Looks like we all did that. That's a lot better than the alternative!I don't care if he did dodge the draft or not... All i know is that i out lived him...
And to me thats all that counts....
Looks like we all did that. That's a lot better than the alternative!
But no matter what the facts may be, I still don't think he's a hero.
